Duran wasn't made to wait for **** all. He quit in the middle of a fight, moved up in weight and Leonard moved on to more significant matters before an eye injury halted his career for the next five years. There was no demand for it, no incentive for it, yet you keep clinging to it.
Yeah that Bristol guy is chatting utter ****e!

Duran didn't weigh anywhere near 200lb....do people realise what that entails for a guy who is only 5'6''??? He'd be huge. There is video footage that exists from that time where he looks big but not that big.

Like Duran's manager said, the fight was verbally agreed on, Duran knew there would be a rematch and he wanted it too cos he thought he could win again.

Duran's story about what happened before the fight, during it and after constantly changes. Cramps, injuries, under training, all a load of BS.

Sugar Ray Leonard even admits in this video at around the 2:04 mark about Roberto Duran weighing 200 between his fights. It was very smart of Ray to get him back in the ring and Roberto has noone to blame but himself. The idiots handling Duran should never have agreed to a rematch to happen 5 months and 5 days after the first fight.

Duran quit, there is no debate about that in my opinion. It is his shame. Thats not the debate here.

I bring up the instances I do in response to someone posting that Mike Tyson claims how awful it is that the best doesn't fight the best these days like they did in his day and before. I bring it up to show that there have always been times when fighters avoided other fighters and played plenty of games.

Leonard made Hearns wait for years for a rematch.
Leonard never even considered a rematch with Benitez.
Leonard made Duran wait the better part of a decade, till Duran was completely gone to give him the rubber match.
Leonard refused the rematch with Hagler.

It took years to get Tyson in the ring with Holyfield.
It took years to get Tyson in the ring with Lewis.

It happens in many eras of boxing.

Right, let's just conveniently ignore the own words spoken at that time of his manager, his trainer, his aide/translator - ya know, the people personally involved and around Duran during that period - and latch on to the words (spoken several decades after the fact) of someone that had zero personal involvement with Duran.

How long should they have waited? Six months and six days? Seven months and seven days? Seeing as you're fond of using quotes, how about the one from Duran in which he states that "he knew the rematch was coming", which does seem to add up given his own verbal agreement (as I've pointed out a few times now) to a rematch just a month removed from Montreal.

Leonard even admits that he knew Duran balooned up to 200 pounds ona regular basis between fights.

If Duran had smart people they wouldn't have let him agree to a hvae rematch so quickly or they would've curtailed his partying and got him in to training camp much sooner. It was a smart move by Leonard and an idiotic one by Duran.

I've told you once and I'll tell you again: Duran sat across from Leonard in an ABC studio just a month removed from the first fight and gave a verbal agreement for a second fight, one in which he has acknowledged that he knew was coming.

Duran wasn't made to wait for anything. Quitting in the middle of a fight doesn't entitle you to an immediate rematch and Leonard was completely inactive for most of that decade. Duran only became a viable option when he barely edged past Barkley and Leonard needed an easy option instead of the biggest threat in the division, Michael Nunn.

Knew that he ballooned up to a weight nobody around Duran even claimed he was? You continually keep ignoring this for some strange reason, or did close associates of Duran have a Leonard-driven agenda now?

Duran's smart people managed to negotiate him an eight million dollar guarantee to fight someone he'd already beaten, even giving him more time to prepare for the second fight than he had for the first.

Leonard openly admits that he knew what almost everyone else knew, that Roberto Duran balooned up to 200 pounds. Leonard was very smart to use this to his advantage. Duran was very ****** and has no one to blame but himself. He shouldn't have balooned up the way that he did. If he had smart people around him, they would've made sure the rematch was at a later date.

It had nothing to do with Duran's people negotiating him a bigger purse, part of Rays strategy to get Roberto back in ASAP was to give him the bigger purse. Leonard knew how important it was to Roberto to get more money than Ray did and he knew this would be too good for Roberto to refuse taking a quick rematch.

Constantly repeating something like a mantra doesn't make it any more true, bruv. Nobody from Duran's own team were claiming he ballooned up to 200 pounds, so why are you? Because Leonard stated that he did? Was Leonard more informed about Duran's life and preparation than the very men that were closest to him?

And of course it had to do with his team negotiating a bigger purse; King specifically stated that they'd be requesting a significantly larger purse for a second fight, and they got it. But hey, go ahead and continue pretending that a rematch was never on the agenda until Leonard heard some rumours about Duran's weight and pulled eight million dollars out of his arsehole.
