    2. Matthysse vs Molina was not supposed to be the great fight it ended up being. It was supposed to be a blow out 3 round massacre by Matthysse.

    3. Thurman vs an old Julio Diaz is not main event worthy.

Sure I caught the fights and Matthysse-Molina was great, but I wasn't going to watch the card TBH. So I imagine casuals and other less interested boxing fans passed on the night. Hopkins vs Shumenov that other Saturday too? Sure I love watching B-Hop, but Shumenov Who? Porter vs Malignaggi sounded more interesting.

You want good ratings, put up good fights on paper and on fight night. People aren't psychics, they see a blow out fight on paper, they won't watch, because they think it'll be a blow out/waste of time. It doesn't matter if the fights end up being good, fans can't know that for sure.
That last part is the reason to always watch boxing, you just never know what is going to happen and boxing has more unexpected outcomes than most other sports.

It is easy enough to change the channel if it is totally worthless but it is usually apparent right away if a fight will be competitive, exciting or terrible.

I think Showtime/GBP will be matching their stars in the second half of the year and it's those ratings you can really judge them on.

It's hard for fans to make any real sense of these numbers of course, because only a handful of journalists have ever made the effort to find out what's good and bad for the networks. And none of them, despite the endless scribbling about the 'cold war', have given us any hard facts about what the profit/loss breakdown is like on one of these cards.

To give this some context though, Rios vs Acosta did 700k on Showtime around the same time of year in 2011. A little earlier in the year, Herrera vs Provodnikov did around 600k (I think) on FNF.

You would have to wonder if Showtime can justify outspending HBO for ratings like these, falling as they do within a 60-80% range of what HBO would expect. I don't know of course, because I've no idea how much money they're making or losing on these cards. But it doesn't make immediate sense when you do a flat comparison between the two.

The B-sides just didn't do it for me. I watched it anyways, and enjoyed one of the 3 fights, and Thurman-Diaz while it lasted. It was one-sided in rounds 1 and 2 but was getting heated in the 3rd round, then Diaz just stopped due to an injury. That type of stuff happening in a main event that wasn't that anticipated in the first place, saps a lot out of a card.

Seriously it was a card with not a single headliner. Why is anyone surprised?

You are a hardcore boxing fan though, that is a bit different than an average viewer.

My general rule is, I always watch boxing first, but if the fight is looking broke after round 3 it is time to at least flip around checking back in to make sure things are keeping on the same course.

I get why average fans didn't turn in to this card though, just no reason to make them tune in.

That's what I was talking about. It's not even 6 months since people were making HBO is dead threads pointing at their ratings....

Schaefer and Haymon don't really know how to put on a good main event. they usually just throw fights out there and say the card is stacked. I don't know how many times that night the showtime crew used that particular word "stacked"

saying something is stacked doesn't make it so.

Matthysse vs Molina was a great fight and honestly should have been the main event. I know it was supposed to be a Thurman showcase but he was fighting an over matched journeyman on the verge of retirement.

it wasn't a main event fight, it was an appearance fight.. nobody wants to see that in a main event... nobody.

that's the problem with the Schaefer/Haymon model. They did the same thing at HBO and it killed the rating there and their doing it again.
