I could be missing it (the money I've personally put in his pocket was earned by excellence in his chosen profession which is a sport that I happen to enjoy as a spectator), but I think that a lot of his fans want to identify with him on a more personal level and that he represents to them ascendance over perceived obstacles they identify (correctly or not) as depriving them of material success.

Combined with the his personal story and the optics he employs, his illiteracy makes him easier to identify with.

One concept that I see him pushing recently (the last few years?) is that his success is not attributable to the talent native to him as much as it is to his work ethic. This is awesome imo and I hope that he keeps it up.

And that hate generates revenue. That's the thing I can't account for (other than pure ******ity); if you dislike someone intensely, why would you want to fatten to his coffers by patronizing his business.
