A lot of people thought Pavlik would win and to this day I have no idea why.

How many times do we need reminding a fighter as limited as Pavlik is not going to beat Hopkins?

That along with the weight it was at. I had zero doubt Hopkins would win the fight with ease.

The bar (and people I knew) were evenly split between Pavlik and Hopkins.

I got the first 4 rounds right. I thought Hopkins would shut out Pavlik in the early going and then Pavlik would come on strong as Father Time would catch up to Hopkins. I thought that Pavlik would win on points but would be clearly winning the last few rounds.

Hopkins impressed a lot of people that night - me included. I really got to understand how people were so impressed with fighters like Archie Moore and Ezzard Charles and Jersey Joe Walcott.

I was one of those. The only reason was Father Time.

Pavlik was a very limited fighter in an ATG sense but he still was good enough to win a belt and outpointed a decent fighter in Jermain Taylor (after KOing him the fight before).

But ya thats why I asked in the thread I was curious because during the fight they made it sound like pavlik was favored and that kinda surprised me.

i was thinking how much cooler it would be if bernard grew out a long ass white/gray beard and let his balding hair grow in on top. Now that would get ratings lol cause then people would realize just how old he is

Yeah, like most people have already said, everyone was saying that Bhop was not too old and Pavlik would be too young and too strong.

In fact, I was one of those who said that Hopkins shouldn't take the fight, that Pavlik was a coward for fighting an old man but Bhop turned it up that night.

TBF, Pavlik was not in the best possible shape and in the days leading up to the fight have been suffering from bronchitis.

Pavlik was a heavy handed killer similar to what Kovalev is today (different fighting styles I know). Consecutive highlight-reel knockouts vs. Zertuche, Miranda, and Taylor got him that reputation. I was a fan but Pavlik fell of the cliff.

In hindsight, who knows why we thought Hopkins was done. He was coming of two close losses to Taylor that could have gone either way, wide victories over Tarver and Wright, and then another close fight against Calzaghe that could have gone either way.

It just goes to show how hyped punchers can be when the power translates to the elite level.

We thought what we did because of what we saw of Hopkins, he lost and got outworked by a young fighter in Taylor and although had a highlight fight against Tarver, the former RJJ conqueror himself was getting old and the Bhop that turned up to fight Wright...well, it was hardly vintage, along with the Calzaghe fights, one of the worst things I've seen in a boxing ring.
