Kelly Pavlik (Williams' wanted it)
Sergio Martinez
Winky Whright
Erislandy Lara
Antonio Margarito
Kermit Cintron
Carlos Quintana
Verno Phillips
Walter Matthysse (25-0, 24 KOS at the time)
That is a fearless fighter... Mayweather take note.
That's hardly murderer's row really.
Looks nice on paper but Martinez 1 and Lara weren't considered hard fights at the time.
Pacquiao for my money but Cotto is up there, when it's all said and then he will have faced the majority of best fighters from 140-154 in his generation. Now at 160 he is fighting the greatest mw of his generation.
Well, when you consider he fought all these guys (147-160) in the span of roughly five years it is pretty impressive. Fighting the welterweight bogeyman (Margarito) and then being willing to fight the next bogeyman (Pavlik) two divisions up takes some major balls.
Although Winky Wright hadn't fought in 18 months (about as much as Mosely when he fought Floyd) he was coming off a very good performance wherein many people at thee time thought he beat Hopkins.
Cintron (then a top 154 pounder) was still a very tough fighter when Williams fought him and was coming off a strong performance where he dominated Alfredo Angulo.
In the same time span Mayweather (who people say has the best resume in recent years...) fought Hatton moving uo from 140 (had lost to Collazo in his only other 147 pound fight), JMM a 130 pounder moving up 3 divisions (only had 1 fight at 135), Shane Mosley (like Winky had been inactive for well over a year), and Victor Ortiz.
Just look at all the tough challenges and opponents he's been in the ring with. Now he's about to move up in weight to challenge the King Sergio Martinez!
I dont know if its fearlessness I think its because of where he sits on the earnings chart. He can be a very profitable B side and a profitable A side. Networks are willing to invest in his fights because they will get a good return. SO the purse for his fight exceed almost everyone not named floyd or manny, which makes him attractive.
Guys who are beneath him want to fight him because he brings a good paydayand MSG expsosure so when Cotto calls on a Trout or a Margs for a fight, they say yes.
On the other hand, his rabid fanbase and the fact he can be beaten makes him attractive to guys like floyd, Manny and sergio because he can help booist ppv sales and/or makes for a good ppv aside for a guy like Sergio.
Cotto deserves credit for reaching up for fights and reaching down for quality opponents to fight.
The De La Hoya of his era. He fought all the greats of his time even when they were very risky fights, ducked no one. He deserves major credit for this and should be held up there with Ali, Holyfield and De La Hoya when it comes to never ducking anybody.
