Alex Ariza filed lawsuit Friday to sue Freddie Roach for defamation

    By Lance Pugmire

    April 11, 2014, 9:55 p.m.

LAS VEGAS -- Manny Pacquiao’s former strength and conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, has sued trainer Freddie Roach for allegedly making false and defamatory statements that Ariza “gave fighters performance-enhancing drugs.”

The lawsuit, filed Friday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, claims Roach made the statements “on or about Jan. 9” in a video interview posted on the Internet.

“As a result of this publication, [Ariza] has suffered and will continue to suffer monetary damages as well as irreversible injury to his reputation and image,” attorney Jonathan S. Milder wrote in the five-page complaint.

Justin Fortune has reunited with Pacquiao as his conditioning coach after last working with the Filipino star in 2007.

Asked about the lawsuit Friday before Pacquiao weighed in for his Saturday welterweight title fight against Timothy Bradley, Roach said, “All I’ve said is that Manny Pacquiao respects Ariza and he respects Justin Fortune and his life’s a better deal with better work. That’s the only thing I can think of.”
The lawsuit seeks punitive damages and called Roach’s statements “negligent” and “reckless,” claiming the comments were undertaken with “fraud” and “malice.”

It won't go anywhere, Ariza doesn't realize what Roach said really isn't something you can take him to court over because nothing was even close to direct. He said he didn't trust him because he'd never tell him what he'd put in his drink, even though Roach stated he'd need to know.

Ariza is most likely going broke slowly without Pacquaio and needs cash. The only damage he's suffered is leaving Pacquaio, joining Rios camp and then making the guy fail the drug test, what a moron; it's his job to prevent that.

next thing you know Freddie will counter Ariza with an Assault charge he can take that to Chinese court and have Ariza locked up abroad for the assault in Macau and than Ariza mysteriously drops the case lol.

Didn't Justin Fortune sue Roach for claiming he took steroids or something like that? and nothing came of it and he dropped the suit?

Roach doesn't know when to shut his mouth, this is how you know he let the fame get to his head he thinks he is untouchable. it happens to all big headed famous people.

DoktorSleepless beat me to it. The ''all I said was..'' defence doesn't work when there is video footage floating around.

Ariza lawsuit doesn't have the legs to stand on because Freddie is stating his position as an opinion and not as a fact. However, if Freddie was stating false and defamatory statements without proof and presenting them as facts then he could land himself in some potential legal trouble.

But Brandon Rios failed a post fight drug test when he never failed one before and it was his first fight with Ariza

Roach made those comments after the fight.

I don't see how Roach loses this in court. Its like saying the sky is blue
