Canelo approached Kirkland in late May for a fight that would be in September. He approached Kirkland after he'd had successful shoulder surgery in April and his team had gone on record saying Kirkland would be ready to go again in September.

Kirkland initially accepted the offer, but a day later pulled out because he said he wasn't fully recovered from his surgery. However there were rumors that Kirkland had declined the offer because he was unsatisfied with the 1 million dollar offer and wanted 2.5 million. And he had someone in his ear giving him bad advise.

He approached Ortiz because Josesito Lopez was suppose to be a walk in the park for him. And he approached Cotto because he wanted to fight him. He didn't approach him once the fight with Martinez was signed he approached him before that. Said he wanted to fight, offered 10 million guaranteed and it was Cotto who declined. It's his choice, but what's wrong with asking for a fight with a fighter?

Now let's be honest Trout didn't land anything significant on either guy because he was forced to be the aggressor and dictate the pace. As we found out he's not a very good fighter when he is the aggressor he's at his best when he is countering his opponent.
Trout was never in the fight against Lara but one can argue that was a horrible style match up for Trout. Canelo is going to be more effective walking Lara down than Trout was so it's not that good of a measuring stick for this fight either IMO. He's also a more complete boxer than Trout is which leads me to believe he won't just follow Lara around the ring, but also look to counter and make Lara the aggressor at times. He displayed he can beat you a number of different ways in the Angulo and Trout fight while Lara fought the same kind of fight against both.
I think Lara is also a bad style matchup for Canelo, unless Canelo makes some drastic changes. If he fights Lara in the center of the ring and waits for openings, he'll get pot-shotted to death.
