to give someone the opportunity to accept or take (something)


Ward offered and GGG wanted to stay at 160 but a Chavez fights comes up and 168 doesn't seem to be a problem

By that standard GGG has also offered a fight to Ward, there's probably quotes along those lines. And also Stevenson has offered a fight to Kovalev by your definition.

In boxing offering usually means making an offer, and that hasn't happened afaik.

They made the decision to stay at 160 before Ward mentioned that he wanted the fight. There has never been a offer and HBO has not pursued the fight btw. HBO is the one that has been giving the options to GGG when he fights on the network.

The team clearly wanted to stay and unify 160 unless there was a big enough fight at 168. GGG/Abel have wanted Jr. for years at 160. So Jr. moved up and he's become available. It's a big fight. Ward is not that big of a fight yet. It's that simple really.

a contractual offer no. team GGG shot that idea down before any of that. honestly I think Chavez is a better economic option for GGG. I'm just pointing out the double standard over zealous GGG fans have.

Martinez fights Cotto on PPV and it's ducking but GGG fights Chavez instead of Ward and a litany of excuses arise for GGG. just pointing out the hypocrisy

The fight proposal is for 3 1/2 months from now, how does he know he will only need one additional week of training? Regardless, props to Chavez for stepping up to the plate, even though he has more to lose than gain in this fight. If he wins the excuse will be GGG was too small and if he loses it'd be the opposite saying Chavez for whooped by a smaller man. Can't wait for this fight though! Cotto-martinez and this are by far the best fights scheduled.

Team Ward shot it down even earlier, using pretty much the same lingo (will be bigger later) but maybe they changed their mind lately. Which would make sense, as GGG's leverage is about to go way up. Oh well, shoulda made that offer.

I don't think Cotto is the problem, it's whether Martinez is gonna face #1 contender GGG at all. If he's too old/frail to do it, maybe he shouldn't be The Champ at mw.
