  • Comments Thread For: Garcia will put Saturday’s ugliness in welterweight rear view

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - First, let’s dispense with a few formalities.

No, I’m neither on the payrolls of Golden Boy Promotions nor Showtime. No, I have zero bloodlines that connect me to Puerto Rico. And no, though I lived on the outskirts of Philadelphia for 10 (mostly) wonderful years in the late 1990s and early 2000s, I don’t have blind loyalty to its cadre of pro boxers.

(NOTE: For some context on that last one, just Google my name alongside Joe Frazier’s.)

So with all that said, here are a few items that can be stated with some certainty.

Yes, I think that Danny Garcia won Saturday night’s fight with Mauricio Herrera. Yes, my 116=112 scorecard matched the judges who put the “majority” in majority decision. And yes, I think his prospects for a move to welterweight are the same today as they were at any point in the pre-fight run-up, even though what he delivered was not what the folks in Bayamon were expecting.

Consider all that a “don’t bother” to anyone who’d been tempted to tell me I’m corrupt or complicit.

As for the “you don’t know **** about boxing” crowd… you’re already beyond reason.

At any rate, whether you viewed the fight’s end result as clear-cut, close or criminal, the effect that it’s likely to have on the grand Garcia game plan going forward pales in comparison to the sky-is-falling cries of “robbery” and “fix” that littered social media in its Saturday night wake. I have to agree with Lyle.......clearly you have to "beat" the champion and while the fight was close Danny won by my estimation. Flame away all you want but it won't change my opinion or the outcome.

Damn right he'll put it in his rear view, pretend like it never happened and run away from a rematch. Disgusting sport and it's paid for writers.

Only giving Herrera 4 rounds is pretty poor judging.

I can understand the 114-114 score by the one judge and by some members of the media, but Herrera really looked to win a lot of close but fairly clear rounds (think Bradley Marquez fight).

The only defense I keep hearing is that Garcia landed harder shots. Garcia didn't really land many clear quality shots though, meanwhile Herrera was landing clear jabs to the head and body, backing Garcia down, moving in and out, and tying him up well.

I certainly don't think the decision was rigged. I would imagine that crowd noise played a role in the judging, as is not uncommon in boxing scoring.

Champion bias/PR bias may have also played a role, who knows.

As for the lasting impact of this fight, I think Lyle represents one extreme view (doesn't matter being his opinion). If Garcia loses in the near future, none of this matters, but if he wins, this "win" will certainly be a small asterisk on his record, one that will fade as time goes on if he keeps winning.

Herrera was the perfect opponent to exploit Garcia. Garcia is not a jabber, nor is he good at walking someone down. The odd thing was that Herrera walked Garcia down in the second half of the fight, I guess Garcia was getting tired by then or just off, because that should've played right into his hands.

The sport and even the journalist are becoming a joke it seems like the both fractions back each other up to drum up false popular belief. By what definition can anyone say Garcia won that fight...all the latest popular boxing quote tossers where ya'll at? This is the shhh that's really killing the sport, mofo's can't get three journalists to just keep it real with the public because god forbid we piss off the players. We may lose access to the press conferences and training camp invites. They booed this fool up out of puerto rico, hell they booed him at the arena. If herrera was any kind of name these same dudes would be hollering like crazy about "disgust" and whatnot. Same shhh that they let broner get away with twice in fights he clearly lost or came to a draw on but somehow got wide wins on the cards...Then when these dudes get exposed it's "He never lived up to his potential" well that's because you sold fools a god who was barely a peasant.

This paragraph right here would make a more legit sports column report than this damage control bs. Boxing needs realism back in it's reporting.
