Chavez is a silver spoon fed, drugged up bum and people's opinions change on him just because he beats a top 20 MW at 168 after just clearly losing to him?

I used to like chavez and hoped he would do well but its almost sickening how his benefits at the expense of others
You are not 100% wrong. He erased everything he gained by fighting hard v sergio with the Vera fiasco. Hell, he pissed the crowd off with the 12th rd performance on Saturday.

He hasn't proven to me he is a consistent professional. He does have a fanbase and sells tickets and gets ratings.

I think saturday was a step forward for him. I hope he continues to move in the right direction.

keep in mind that rubio lives nearly 2 hour drive from san antonio, a lot of homies showed there for him...

Maybe, but Vera draws quite well in Texas himself. I doubt Rubio can account for anything near the other 7k that didn't show up this time.

Rubio is a very attractive fighter to mexicans, I'm not sure exactly why. His fight with Chavez drew the biggest rating in like 4 years and he gets very good TV ratings fighting nobodies in mexico

He was out of shape, he wasn't scared to ****, he just didn't have the cardio for it.

I think Jr can give us some good fights, if he comes in shape and takes this sport seriously.
Well his reward for coming out of shape and barely throwing was a wide UD win in a clear robbrey

Lasting 11 rounds against Martinez is nothing to scoff at. He took some hellacious shots for 11 rounds and kept coming.
Thats all he did, he took punches and barely threw anything, he didnt try to win. Cong**** to his great chin but doing a clottey is nothing to be proud of

I think you're over stating Rubio's popularity. At least in the US. I don't think he had much to do with the high ratings that time. Probably had more to do with Donaire in the undercard.

While I agree because I'm a hardcore fan, we can't dismiss the excitement that brawls bring to the sport. Most casual fans want to see those, than some technical fights. The fact is, we are not coming out for the Rigo's and Molina's of the world, we are paying for the Rios vs Alvarado fights instead.

So the question is, who is to blame?
I don't really concern myself with what the casual fan wants outside of PPV. I don't think the average casual fan is planning his night around a fight involving somebody not named Mayweather or Pacquaio. You have the guys like Jr, GGG, and even Broner you do big numbers on "free" TV. But I think those numbers are loaded with channel surfers and ethnic bandwagon jumpers. The Mexicans rally around Jr. AB was creating a lotta buzz in the black community. But for my money. I don't think the average casual fan could pick GGG, Jr, Kirkland, or any other "action fighter" out of a lineup. So at day's end. The notion that nobody wants to want Rigo is either a cop out by the promoters or networks to keep him away from more marketable guys. Or, the "hardcore" fanbase is now littered with uneducated fight fans. That are likely only "hardcore" fans because they're in love with a couple guys or completely hate a couple others. But to me that's not a hardcore fan.

Rubio is popular in Mexico at least.

Jr kills me with his "COME ON, MAN!!!" reaction to fouls ! He over does it and sells it to put guilt on his opponent. His hilarious invincibility streak came into play, when he absorbed a 10-hit barrage and taunted Vera like it had no effect. In the 8th round he did the "hit me again, hit me again!" wave in.

Jr speaks better english than I do! In all the fights and specials I've seen, he always used a translator. He did here too. But Kellerman asked him about GGG, and I turned away for a second, and I heard, GGG is a great opponent and I'd like to fight him! Wait a second, I understood that ! And it wasnt that broken english, where you know the guy was practicing it? He sounded as clear as if he lived around the corner!
