Comments Thread For: Frank Warren on Hand Injuries, Hamed, Steve Collins Jr.

The volume of modern day fighters whose careers are temporarily - or sometimes permanently - derailed due to damaged hands is both a mystery and a worry.

Back in the middle decades of the last century, leading prizefighters of the day routinely fought more times in a year than several contemporary boxers fight during their entire careers.

The old timers wore significantly smaller gloves and the duration of championship fights back then were noticeably longer. Nevertheless their hands somehow seemed to hold up.

    Good stuff.

Those handinjuries are definetely a worry. Several danish prospects including Torben Keller and olympian Dennis Ceylan is experiencing problems and that is way to early in their careers.

Frank should stick to stuff like this.

Then people would think he was less of a twat.

I suspect that in the bare knuckle days fighters didn't throw as many punches. They must have been more economical, can't imagine that it would be a good idea to throw 5 or 6 punch combos to the head with unprotected hands.

I think i have the answer to this. Boxers of the older era had stronger hands. They where in most cases from the working class doing heavy work that incorporating lifting heavy stuff, bending, pulling, squeezing and therefore hardening their hands from childhood. All that hard work that helped a prizefighter has now been replaced by machines. I do belive prizefighters of today would benefit from speending more time exerzising their hands. Squeezing rubber balls for example.

Collins Jr. should give up rugby if he's serious about boxing, rugby will damage his hands (if it hasn't already).

Those are some good points. You could be right.

Loved the Hamed anecdote......it sort of summed-up what a prize, arrogant mammary the Prince became in his heyday and how Warren was still trying to keep the little twerp on an even keel. Frank has made plenty of mistakes but he tried to do his best by Hamed and Naz's decision to hand-out jobs to family and friends who could not run a village fete was a huge mistake.
