Comments Thread For: Garcia Takes Step To Become Puerto Rico's Next Star

By Jake Donovan - Danny Garcia was born and raised in North Philadelphia, but has always embraced his Puerto Rican roots. The question heading into his upcoming world 140 lb. championship title defense versus Mauricio Herrera is whether or not Puerto Rico is ready to embrace Danny Garcia.

The early returns suggest a resounding yes.

The March 15 world title fight was formally announced during a press conference held Tuesday in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, which will play host to the event. The bout is part of a Showtime-televised tripleheader that also includes former two division champs Juan Manuel Lopez and Daniel Ponce de Leon in a rematch to their June ’08 encounter; and a heavyweight clash between Deontay Wilder and Malik Scott. It's a pretty good idea trying to gain some PR popularity as a prospective Floyd opponent. They're also at a low point in terms of domestic champs.

this card doesn't excite me at all...Herrera moving up a weight may give a decent account of himself but won't win; neither will Sott who'll get blasted////Juanma may go w/the 1st hard shot Ponce hits him with...this may be the best of the 3 for it's uncertainty...

Go live in Puerto Rico Danny Garcia and take up citizenship there. If you're born in America - you're an American. If you don't want to embrace that, then go move somewhere else. I might as well call myself English because my roots are from there. That's the problem with this country everyone wants to be from somewhere else - there's no unity.

Danny Garcia is a worthy champion and his skills are better than his reputation. Hope one day he'll rematch Lucas Mattyhsse. And Danny's father is a pretty funny guy!

You do know Puerto Rico is part of the US right? It's a commonwealth. I do get what you are saying though. It's sad that he didn't go over, try to learn Spanish or want anything to do with the island before he needed a fan base. If I was them I wouldn't want anything to do with his wanna be a$$. He's basically a Pigga. Plus to say that this is the biggest reaction that they have had for a fight is a huge slap in the face for Tito and all the other greats that actually represented PR with honor.

Garcia is Puerto Rican, whether he speaks Spanish or not, so why not market yourself that way. He has a right to make be proud of his roots and its cool with me. He is like alot of second or third generation people that still identify with the old country, no different than Irish American, Italian American or some Mexican American fighters (who also don't speak Spanish).

Don't know anything about Herrera except his record. Looks like he might be a decent opponent. Never lost by KO, and it looks like he's only lost to decent opposition. He appears to have no power, though. Anyone have any knowledge of the guy?
