He should get sone support, not as much as a nativ from the island but thats normal. He is considered a Rican first, and a Latino second in the US due to his roots. Him not knowing Spanish is no big deal, most Latinos from or living in the US are more proud of their roots and defend Latino culture. There is no such thing as boricua or mexican blood, though. In the long run, I like Danny because I am Latino just not in this fight cause its vs a Mexican.eComment

yup it really does seem that way especially now that hes connecting with his ethnic fan base to take care of financial side of things ie ticket/ppvs which will definitely catapult him to stardom. I already made a thread where i made the case for him being #9 or 10 p4p already.Comment

Well the thing about it is.. Puerto Ricans are American genius. They are citizens of the U.S. even without having been born in the States. It's not an equal comparison. A better comparison is, if I am Native American I want to do something for my Native American people. They are American none-the-less. If I am African American and want to do something for my people then I can do it . If I am of Mexican background but want to do something for my people then I'd probably be in Cali or the southwest. I'm still Latin American. If Danny Garcia wants to do something for his Puerto Ricans than there isn't anything wrong with doing it in PR. They are all Americans. You big dummy..Go live in Puerto Rico Danny Garcia and take up citizenship there. If you're born in America - you're an American. If you don't want to embrace that, then go move somewhere else. I might as well call myself English because my roots are from there. That's the problem with this country everyone wants to be from somewhere else - there's no unity.Comment

It's a different game now than it was back in the day. Floyd makes nearly all of his money strictly from boxing/promoting, whereas SRL & Ali saw their names and faces plastered everywhere during their heyday.Cotto speaks the Queens English (thou not great) but speaks English and I don't see him making Millions or even Hundreds of Thousands of dollars with anybody in any supplemental sponsorship. Tito didn't speak English & I doubt he would've gotten any sponsorships if he did. Boxing is'nt a mainstream sport and I don't see Coca Cola, Pepsi or Wheaties looking to hire professional Boxers to be put in there commercials or cans or on their boxes.
I just don't see it..
So, comparing Cotto and Tito (both of whom have enjoyed endorsement deals anyway, for the record) to fighters during the 70's/80's is a non-starter.
Boxing was in high demand once upon a time, especially a 17-year old kid who could rightfully claim to be one of the very best in the world. Bill Cayton managed him for a time and encouraged him to learn English for this very reason, but was met with resistance (and ultimately, walking papers) by Benitez' father.Comment
