Deontay Wilder to get WBC title shot with win on March 15

Just one fight stands between Tuscaloosa's Deontay Wilder and a shot the World Boxing Council heavyweight title.

That final hurdle was made official as Wilder, a 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, will fight 33-year-old Malik Scott in Puerto Rico on March 15.

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Wilder, told The Tuscaloosa News that the WBC has made the Wilder-Scott fight a title eliminator, meaning the winner will get a mandatory shot at the WBC title.

The WBC's No. 1 and No. 2 contenders, Bermane Stiverne and Chris Arreola, will fight for the vacant WBC title, although the date and location have not been set yet. Schaefer said the winner will then fight the Wilder-Scott winner as the champion's first mandatory title defense. The WBC title was vacated by Vitali Klitschko earlier this month.

"The winner of this fight here will be the next mandatory for the winner of Arreola-Stiverne" Schaefer said. "The WBC rules stipulate that when two fighters fight for a vacant title, they will have to do an immediate mandatory and the winner of Deontay Wilder and Malik Scott will be that mandatory.

"So that's why I say there's a lot riding on this fight for each guy because they will have a guaranteed world title shot."

Wilder was excited to hear that so much will be riding on the outcome.

"I said 2014 was going to be a great year for me," Wilder said. "Now (the possible title shot) is just more pudding on the cake. It's great, man."

That's what they're saying about Jennings-Perez as well.

My su****ion is that they are eliminators, and the winners will meet for a final eliminator. But we'll see.

It's extremely well played by team Wilder actually. Should be a note in the book for anyone looking to build a fighter's career.

Has Wilder actually fought anyone with a winning record, not coming off a loss?

One can only hope. Especially since Vital retiring loses credibility to the belt. They should build it back up but making the champ fight the toughest available and eliminators help.

Wilder vs Jennings would be a HUGE american fight. The two most exciting heavyweights in awhile. Jennings with his heartvandvgriding toughness against Wilders mac truck power.

Of course this is highly unlikely for money reasons. If one of them wins the belt first they can milk it as the two great Americans finally fighting for the he belt against each other! I bet it highly depends on how wilder looks. If he steam rolls Then he's next in line. If he struggles I think Jennings gets it with Wilder getting one more fight.

I know stiverne and Areola are both american but neither are undefeated or have the potential hype trains these guys have.

It does indeed. I don't really think Jennings is exciting though. The first 11 rounds of his last fight were incredibly boring.

The milking issue definitely comes into it, as HBO would probably weasel their way in to hype up a new american heavyweight champion fighting bum after bum.

You can be assured that none of them will be eager to take on Wlad that's for sure.

it's upto the fans to pressure whoever wins that WBC strap to face Wlad IMMIDIATLEY

if they don't they are not a real champion

none of this stringing it out, wlad is almost 38 years old, waiting for him to retire would be the ultimate ***** move

Absolutely. I just think there will be a Haye/Wlad situation brewing. Both sides talking crap - nobody knows what the hell is going on despite both sides saying they want the fight.

Apparently Chisora/Fury is also an eliminator for the belt, so the future WBC champ has his hands full with the rest of the top 10 vying for that belt, whilst doing everything possible to avoid Wlad.

Chisora will end up with a shot as he's the only one with the balls to step it up.

Is anyone actually surprised? It was obvious from the beggining.

Anyway, who gives a shit, everybody know that there is only one Heavyweight champion of the world and he's name is Wladimir Klitschko.

Wilder can run but he can't hide.
