  • Comments Thread For: HBO Nearly Doubles Showtime In Jan. 25 Boxing Ratings

Showtime’s first entry of its 2014 boxing season also served as the first head-to-head clash with rival HBO, as both networks offered championship boxing on its airwaves. The end result was further proof that dueling broadcasts continue to do more harm than good for both networks.

Following a monstrous year in 2013 that saw Showtime ratings rise by more than 60%, its January 25 doubleheader from Washington D.C. averaged just 390,000 viewers over the course of the evening.

The rating was nearly doubled by HBO’s own doubleheader from New York City, which delivered an average total audience of 777,000 viewers for its 2014 Boxing After Dark premiere. The tally comes 11% below the series’ 2013 overall average. [Click Here To Read More]

They need to stop scheduling cards the same night. Now neither has any card scheduled for February.

It's good that the Jennings fight drew a large audience. A good sign for the Heavyweight division.

I'm not surprised. HBO has more subscribers, the better fights and had a more well known fighter headlining the card in Mikey. Petersen is a local draw in the DC area but he isn't a national headliner.

IMO SHowtime will never beat HBO head to head unless HBO has (no disrespect intended) rigo or crawford headlining and sho has broner/canelo/bhop fighting.

SHo should continue to show tripleheaders and pack their cards.

Showtime just doesnt have the viewers and it prob never will. Their programing is just not as good. The only reason they had high ratings in 2013 is because they were giving away showtime free most of the year. I had it free the last 4 months.

HBO had better ratings, but the Showtime fights were WAY better. Garcia vs. Burgos wasn't better than Charlo vs. Rosado, and the Peterson fight was good too! I must admit, I missed the heavyweight fight on HBO.

It's a shame as Showtime has the better shows by far.

Unless they're televising Canelo, Broner, or Hopkins, SHO's ratings are awful. (And moving Canelo to PPV means one less draw for the actual network.)

Mikey is not much of a draw, his undercards are usually stacked with a very popular fighter like Donaire, or in this card Spilka that will bring the the bulk of the viewers

HBO only has 22% more viewers, they shouldnt be doubling sho numbers, especially with a rather low ratings card
