I don't think his chin is necessarily bad but his defense has holes and that is clear to see. I like him, I am a fan but I think a lot of people are too sold on him based on everything hes hit so far has gone down & nobody has been able to exploit the rather blatant defensive flaws which he has.

He leaves his chin too high.
He has no upper body movement.
He doesn't move his head at all. I've noticed several times when he digs that straight right to the body he keeps his head dead centre, a good fighter will capitalise on that & paste him with a counter left hook.

His defense is basically his offense and footwork.

He has holes. I certainly won't undersell Stevenson here, I think he has a great shot. In fact I feel any fighter who takes the part of the aggressor against Stevenson is playing with fire nevermind one who don't move his head and Kovalev will be on that front foot.

JDJ has been doing well with Kovalev in making him more defensively aware and just tighter, more controlled all around. People getting excited from Amateur KOs will be disappointed for a while to come.

I tend to think more like this^ - you fight enough times you're gonna go down. A lot of folk on NSB automatically declare any fighter who gets knocked down ever, whether in sparring, in the ams or the pros to be chinny.

I've no reason to believe Kovalev is particularly vulnerable, nor do I think Stevenson is - probably, given the opportunity either could KO the other, but I think the deciding factor will be defensive responsibility more than 'chinnyness'.

Difficult to say with the Atoev KO from the clip shown whether or not it was actually a KO or a KD - but even if it were considered a KO in the ams it may well not have been considered one in a pro fight - in addition of course, Kovalev has been training as a pro now for an additional 5 years and does seem to have bulked up a little and grown in strength and stamina.

As for a Stevenson fight - whilst I favour Kovalev, it could absolutely go either way - as has been pointed out elsewhere the counter that Atoev caught Kovalev with is the kinda thing you'd see coming from Stevenson - Kovalev will know this and train for it but has he the skill and reflexes to avoid it all night?

Incidentally, regarding the Golovkin - Kovalev rumours; - according to Kovalev they sparred many times, but on one occasion he had to take a knee following a bodyshot by GGG. At the time Kovalev had just resumed training after a holiday in Russia whereas Golovkin had been in camp for a number of weeks and was basically fight ready.

This is the exact reason why.

Hopkins isn't stopping Kovalev anyone with a grain of sense can see that.

He also has a habit of squaring his feet when he's coming inside. Squared feet, little head movement and a chin up in the air?

Ethier way getting koed with headgear is a serious concern. If you can't take punches with headgear on then your chin is suspect as hell. Fighters with that type of history usually get ktfo

Imo it's better to play the aggressor against Stevenson than to let him come at you. When Bellew actually went for it a couple of times, he troubled Stevenson, but when he fought on the backfoot he basically had no chance.
