Comments Thread For: Arum: Mikey Garcia One Of 10 Best Pound-For-Pound

One fight into his stop at junior lightweight, Mikey Garcia already is commonly considered one of the world’s two best boxers at 130 pounds.

Garcia’s promoter feels his accomplishments warrant even more recognition than that.

“I really believe he’s a top 10 pound-for-pounder right now,” Bob Arum said, “and I believe that, long-term, Mikey will challenge [for], if not be universally accepted as, the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing.”

He has a case, although we all know he's not making it for the right reasons.

Not yet. Can't say that yet.

And fast forward five years when Garcia isn't Top Rank anymore, and Arum's calling him a bum.

I disagree. P4P is a combination of current ability and accomplishment imo. His ability leaves nothing to be desired, but his accomplishments are a bit too thin for P4P consideration. He only has two really good wins, Salido and Martinez (Juanma doesn't count, he was beyond shot), and those guys are world class, but not elite.

not yet, but he's making his way there. Let's hope the "cold war" doesn't deny him a career defining fight.

That's right Arum. Neither Tim or Manny want to extend their contracts so it's about time to build another "p4p best champ ever".

I like Mikey's response. If all goes well, he should have a big 2014.

Mikey is talented but he shouldn't be in p4p discussions yet.

IMO his best win was Salido, let's see how he looks when he fights some better fighters. Gamboa would be a start.

Mikey has started to make his case with the Salido and Martinez wins. But, like everyone else is saying, not yet.

Already drumming up young Mikey as an opponent for joke man Manny Pacquiao. Bob Arum's stubbornness and greed are going to sabotage the career of Mikey Garcia. The cold war is stopping Mikey from really validating himself as a real fighter. Scoring a knockout over Juanma Lopez does nothing to boost his jacket. They're gonna keep Mikey in there with chinny guys until Pacquiao really exposes his chin. Then Mikey will be damaged.
