This where HBO can shine on a PPV. GGG vs. James Kirkland is HOT!!! The undercard has to be ON BLAST for a PPV event, but it it a BIG TIME fight. I would LOVE to see it on a Manny undercard! GET IT DONE BOB (if you can work with 50 Cents).
Cause of that one win in the last 2 years or so? Damn!
Not everyone is avoiding GGG, but not only do we have promoters who block good fights but we have networks who rather put on a mismatch than a fight between two guys at the same weight level. Ridiculous. I could hear the HBO commentators now making a big deal about how awesome the fight is and not even mention that a legite opponent was turned down.
According to promoter Gary Shaw, HBO took a pass, for the moment, on a potential fight between Daniel Geale (29-2, 15KOs) and WBA/IBO champion Gennady Golovkin.
Geale, who Shaw promotes, is scheduled to face Garth Wood (12-3-1, 8KOs) on February 19th in Syndey Australia, and Golovkin (28-0, 25KOs) defends his title on February 1 against Osumanu Adama (22-3, 16KOs).

Geale vacated his title last year when GGG was at the door...
GGG vs Kirkland is a mis-match. Yes James can punch and he has all the heart in the world but GGG would be able to out box him because James is too slow. The only good that could come from this fight would be seeing how GGG dealt with pressure should the fight get out of the 1st round because Kirkland only knows coming forward. Kirkland won't quit, but I see this as an early KO for GGG because they would jump on James from the opening bell because of his history of getting hurt when he's cold.
I'm glad to see HBO turn down a GGG opponent (credible opponent) so I know its not just Ward that they were doing it to. Not saying Geale would win but he is just as credible as Stevens was.
Considering GGG is intent on fighting 4 times this year, there should be no reason for both fights to be made.
I would actually prefer Kirkland took a fight at 160 before stepping in with GGG; you know all the anti-GGG brigade will play the GGG picking on 154 pounders card.
