Comments Thread For: Roy Jones Jr: Cotto Has To Batter Martinez Early To Win

Former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. gave his take on the potential fight between WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28KOs) and Puerto Rican superstar Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31KOs), which is being targeted for June 7th at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Cotto will attempt to win his fourth divisional title against a bigger man. In order to win, Jones feels Cotto must bring the fight to Martinez from the opening bell - similar to what Cotto did in his three round destruction of Delvin Rodriguez in October.

Yeah, just as i thought, he didn't use the word "batter" at all.
I was finding it hard to imagine RJJ using that word, which is chiefly British slang.
Never mind, moving on, but i hope lessons have been learned.

First, it's very important to see what weight they are fighting at. Cotto will be small for 160. 157 would be better for him.

The jab is the key for both men. Sergio needs to keep Cotto on the outside with the jab and connect with the straight left to hurt Cotto. Cotto needs to use his jab to get inside and close the distance between them. He'll have to attack Sergio's body to slow his old legs down. Martinez will have to consistently get through Cotto's high guard. It would serve him well to attack Cotto's body too.

Which guy gasses first if it gets late in the fight?

My pick Sergio late stoppage. Hopefully he's fully recovered from his past injuries.

easier said...he's not fighting Delvin...Sergio will box like he did vs JCC jr, & win & decision, unless he's that far gone after 1 1/2 yrs off...but he's smart & wouldn't b taking the bout as his 1st 1 back if he didn't think he'd win...Sampson wouldn't let him take it...

If Martinez is fully healed up hes gonna tattoo Cotto all day. That is IF his legs hold up.

I think JCC jr comparison is kinda unfair as that guy is a talentless hack and Cotto on the other hand is a living legend. So it wont be as easy as Chavez but a Martinez 100% healed up will "beat up" cotto.

Cotto's drop step power jab is going to get countered by Martinez left

Martinez would counter Macklin's power jab with a left uppercut or straight left. Cotto is vulnerable to both punches
