Not sure i believe that they postponed the Mares fight to get him on Floyd's undercard. They should have known all along that Canelo was not going to fight on an undercard anymore. Why wouldn't they just tell Mares to wait until May in the first place?

Most likely it was due to the underwhelming ticket sales and Showtime may have been looking at losing money on the fight. Just like in 2009 when Mayweather faked a rib injury to move the Marquez fight from July to September after ticket sales were stagnet.

Then again given the proximity to the fight and the outcome of the first match, it was in the back of my mind that he was trying to get out of this fight someway......this report sounds pretty bad for him. I'll just leave it at that because I do (did) truly think he was one of the warriors of the sport and hopefully this report is later found to be false.
Lol, I think you're the only one that thinks Mares is trying to get out of the fight. The rest of us think it's just GBP's ploy to get the fight on Floyd's undercard.

Where's the outrage? double standards here on BS. seem to recall somebody else injured his rib and was lambasted as being shook scared etc. Interesting...

Since the first report of the injury I suspected that this is just an attempt by Gbp to get it on Floyd's undercard. Money wise it makes sense for every one involved , it's good business for them .

Abner is one of my favorite young fighters. I also hope that the rib injury (if it exists) is not too severe. He conveniently got hurt. This might save his career in the long run. If a rematch would be anything like the first fight, I could see Abner getting brutally KTFO again. Not good for anybody to get stopped like that.

Don't think they're going to wait until May to get the fight underway. It was suppose to take place February, I'm sure they'll get the fight by March. Maybe under the Canelo undercard. After all Golden Boy is going to need some help selling the Canelo fight now that there will be no Cotto.

I guess....maybe I missed the point of the article. I thought it said he told people he got hurt sparring at a gym in Mexico. There are now people saying that he never even trained there......where does GBP even come into play from that article? It sounds like he lied about sparring there which means he probably lied about getting hurt too, so it appears all culpability falls on Mares' shoulders.

Could GBP have convinced him to do so for their benefit? Maybe, but the article does not suggest that.

somethin's fishy but thats boxing. Mares will lose again. Mares looks very small to me. biggest mistake of Arum was not pushing for that fight with Donaire. His boy would have remained a top P4P fighter and easily beaten Mares.

There aren't really any tests you can do for a "rib injury" or a "hurt back." If someone says their ribs or back hurt, there isn't any way to disprove it.
