From a promotion perspective they can do nothing with this to build him. Imagine what would happen if Mayweather lost by breaking his own hand on his opponents face. Nobody would give the guy who beats him credit.

Really now... we going with that? He was dominant In the Okami fight and Bonnar fight. Chael just a mad man who'll take you down and he had trouble with that in his first fight. Even when he fought Wiedman the first time, he was working the leg kicks, until he got ****y and got KTFO.

The problem is they throw their best fighters in with the best too early. They don't cultivate or develop stars. Nobody gets built up. In theory it's great for the hardcore fans but in reality people don't build up any anticipation/interest in fighters they haven't seen a lot of.

They need to take a page out of boxings book if they want to grow.

you are right, they always match best vs best so most challengers already have defeats and its harder to market them. Also when they're always competing against high level opposition is hard to win let alone look good.
Thats why most fighters are point fighters because winning is all that matters.
In boxing if you are knocking people out you will get a title shot even if you lose a bunch of times

there are no tune up fights, some of boxing greatest kos or signature moments have come on tune up fights or easy title defenses.

For all the talk of how Silva vs Weidman would destroy any boxing PPV it may have in fact become the biggest disaster in their history.

1. Despite all the promo and hype their google searches were only trending at 500k before the fight further highlighting their failing business. Remember Manny-Rios was trending similarly and that did 500k buys.
2. Silva breaks his leg in a horrific manner which will clearly turn a lot of fans off MMA. They were afraid to show the replay again.
3. They were hoping to turn Weidman into the next big US star but this win will do nothing for his image. Nobody is going to be forking out for his next fight after this. Their star's career is over and no one is there to replace him.
4. MMA's most talented fighter loses twice in a row in embarrassingly bad fashion.
