The problem is they throw their best fighters in with the best too early. They don't cultivate or develop stars. Nobody gets built up. In theory it's great for the hardcore fans but in reality people don't build up any anticipation/interest in fighters they haven't seen a lot of.
They need to take a page out of boxings book if they want to grow.

UFC doesn't pick up scrubs though...well they do, but they can't afford having 20 plus fights to build up....even 5 is too much because it'd take too long.
UFC is a sanctioning body and a promoter all at once. I like their concept of having the best fight the best and earning your way up
I watched some documentary on the UFC (in the background as I was doing some work) it seems like they suffered some big losses early in their development involving their star fighters and even recently with Brock Lesnar but have been able to recover. Jon Jones appears to be their biggest star now and apparently his last PPV only did 325,000 buys. With Silva and GSP out of the picture they got their work cut out for them. Their heavyweight division is even worse than boxing.
They do have a great TV contract with FOX though and their fighters arent paid highly, so its not about to "die".
