Josesito is an overachiever who's lost three out of his last five fights. Granted, two of those losses came against Maidana himself and Canelo Alvarez (whom he had no business fighting), but he could easily have lost to Ortiz, if not for the broken jaw. In other words, the kid's a gamer, but he's not all that.

Broner, as I've already stated, is too small to beat 147's best. And although he's good, he's not that good.

You're probably right with your closing statement. If Chino had fought a third time this year against a good fighter, he might've deserved FOTY based, in part, on activity.
Just to play devil's advocate....Maidana beat a top 10-15 WW in Josesito and then beat (according to Ring) a P4P fighter in Broner, and doing so in a very entertaining manner.

To change course, Floyd beat two P4P fighters this year (Ghost and Canelo), according to Ring. When you think about it, it's kinda obvious who the top Ring magazine candidates are.

All good points, but you know how people argue about rankings and perceived quality around here. Past the top two guys or so, everyone's opinion is all over the place.

I think both Floyd and Chino have their arguments. I also think Danny Garcia and a couple of others have theirs, too. I just think Rigo edges them out. Did anyone else beat a consensus top-five P4P fighter? I think that goes a long way.

J.Gonzalez biggest win is against a good fighter of Abner Mares who is a hyped-up Mexican champion, and it ended with a lucky punch in the 1st round !

          ______________

D.Garcia doesn't deserve to be in this list, his two wins are literally irrelevant ! the first was against washed-up never-been-good average famous boxer with a fan base , AKA Zab Judah !

the second against against the No.2 P4P hype-job in the world of professional boxing, AKA Matthysse !

I expect that 2014 will be the end of the lucky bubble called D.Garcia ! he isn't that good, he has never been good, so don't call his next defeat an upset, because it was frustrating to read " Maidana upsetting Broner "
Not going to seriously respond to this garbage.

Gonzalez win over Mares was of similar quality if not a shade better IMO, he's being criminally slept on here, I don't see any real value in an Agbeko win at this point.

tough call between Maidana and Garcia
go with Garcia though, he's the legit champ at his weight now
like Maidana more, but his wins weren't as good as Garcia's were
if Floyd's gonna fight Khan, wouldn't mind Maidana-Garcia tbh
but Garcia made a statement shutting down Lucas after he beat Khan

I like Maidana but beating Broner is not fighter the year material unless you rated Broner higher than you should of.

As I recall, Donaire was universally regarded as the higher rated P4P fighter at the time. The thing that enhances Jhonny's win is the fact that he took Mares out in one, but I think the reason why nearly all voters are overlooking Gonzalez is because they feel his win over Abner was a little fluky. Rigo put on a twelve round schooling of a top fighter. Tough to write that one off.

I agree; the Agbeko win didn't really mean much. Then again, Gonzalez's two other wins in 2013 meant absolutely nothing.

i'm torn between between rigondeaux, garcia, and kovalev. not sure who to vote for in the poll. being a huge fan of matthysse, garcia's win over lucas was very impressive. although he faded late against judah, it was still a clear and solid win. kovalev was a straight killer this whole year. best overall run for 2013 imo. then we go to rigondeaux, who just effortlessly dominated the (then) no. 1 super bantamweight, top 10 p4p fighter in the world. i'll probably go with el chacal, but i wouldn't be upset with either of the two guys winning it (actually awards).
