  • If a rematch is in the contract I honestly don't think Broner wants it. Lol

... I think there's no legit rematch clause -- as long as Maidana was his mandatory...

      • Did Paulie get his rematch with Broner?

Broner refused to give Paulie a rematch. Problem solved.

        • Broner is a Loser

I see all this dialogue about how Broner deserves a rematch -- he deserves nothing. What he actually got, and earned, was being fed a can of"Whup A$$" that he ate for 12 rounds. As a punk, he should be nothing more than a undercard fighter going forward. His career has plunged -- there will be no recovery, he was exposed.

American boxing lacks the real champions after Roy Jones and Tyson ! they only have Ward whom they don't support !

Broner is not very much different from Mayweather, both are celebrities more than real boxing champions !
            Some of us do.

Most fighters would have easily wilted or quit under those kind of perilous situations.
I'm never the one to dispute the guts needed to fight professionally but Broner was never a champion. He was a manufactured belt holder who did his part in promoting himself as a polarizing figure. As far as the boxing part, it was not difficult to see the signs of a major con in his last two prior performances. And sure enough, as soon as he faced a true challenge, a hard puncher who he couldn't walk down, he buckled. I thought he had enough to handle Maidana but this fight confirmed to me that Broner's skill set is not elite.

Also, a champion doesn't wait a few seconds after a minor head butt and fall to the canvas looking for the referee's sympathy. You think JCC would've pulled that lame stunt? Hell nawh.

Maidana should next target the best paying fight. If it's not Mayweather, then use Roy Jones' "60/40 I whoop yo' ass" on Broner. Or tell Broner to fight Thurman first. I'm sure Keith would appreciate the opportunity to record another beat down and get more exposure as well.

I agree that a lot of what you have posted is true. In addition, it's a known fact that Broner's level of opposition left very much to be desired. However, where I have to disagree is that he was never a true champion. One doesn't win titles in three different weight classes and lack the drive, dedication and skill to be successful.

Also, while I agree that Broner was attempting to oversell the head butt he sustained from Maidana through the use of gamesmanship; However it doesn't make him any less or more of a champion than anybody else because fighters constantly attempt to gain an edge on their opponent's all the time. For example, Bernard Hopkins does this all the time by attempting to get his opponents DQ or have points deducted from them through the use of gamesmanship after he is usually the one who initiates the rough house tactics.

Also, it's ironic you mentioned JCC because I can recall how he quit against Frankie Randall in their rematch, when he had sustained an accidental head butt in order to win the fight on a technicality because he was on the verge of losing to him for the second time.

                • @champion4ever, you won't get any argument from me about the dedication and skills necessary to become a professional boxer, especially at the highest levels of the sport. But being a belt holder isn't always synonymous with championship-level class. There are too many of these trinkets these days and most can be had through judicious matchmaking and politics. e.g. Broner vs Malignaggi, Alvarez vs Hatton.

Anyway, you're not a WW champion until you beat Mayweather. You can be a belt holder but not a champion.

For me, if I compare a fighter who wins by resorting to illegal tacts to the extent allowed by the referee of the evening, against one who abides by the rules of the sport through the use of pure skills, I see the latter as a greater champion. Ward used holding as a major component of his strategy against Kessler. Because he could away with it. But Rigo's movement and superb counters against Donaire exemplify championship level skills. I respect fighters like Ward and Hopkins for their gritty effectiveness in the ring. But Rigo schooling Donaire is what I would call a championship performance. Just my preference.

As far as quitting, Duran's No Mas against Leonard is a stain. But in context against his storied HoF career, it's somewhat forgivable. Broner's stunt in round 8 illustrated his delusions. He had done nothing so far to merit his P4P #3 claim. The attempt to fake injury (and poorly done at that) lost him a lot of credibility IMO.

                  • The only reason for Maidana giving a rematch is because he wanted to give Broner another and worse beating, but im sure Maidana is content with the one he dished out already. The fight wasn't close so no need to give a rematch.

Floyd doesn't give rematches when he wins comfortably does he? Broner wouldn't give maidana a rematch if he won easily as well.
