Cuban athletes are pretty close to ****** no they are not allowed to turn pro and if they leave the island to do so somehow which usually the only way is defecting they are labeled immediately as traitors and smeared all over the news as disgraces to Cuba and loving money more than their country and people.

They are not allowed to return and their families left behind have to carry their shame. That is why leaving is not so easy.

Cuba is allies with Iran, Russia etc and they hate America and its ally. They hate the US so much that they treat fellow Cubans who seek a better life in the US as scum.

The athletes defect for $ and maybe for the notoriety, fame and the chance to be considered great which I don't think you can be achieved from the amateurs. even if reasonably successful they will be able to support their family 1000x more then if they stayed in Cuba. They aren't ****** just because they aren't paid millions but their National heroes.

I went to Cuba this year and it's a second world country but from my limited experience it's safe the people are pretty happy and it's a decent life, It's not great but Ive seen worse. Im not going to get political but I think allot of the bs that has happend in Cuba the States are to blame.

the government has to put down the athletes publicly but I think it's mostly for propaganda the Cubans I talked to cheered for the Cubans that defected they understood it was a chance for a better life.

It Is the Government that labels them traitors the people have their own opinion some agree some don't but if you ever really met any retired gold medalists in Cuba you would know they where disgustingly exploited without the option of someday leave and have a better life to the point of almost it being slavery. Dedicating your whole life to something and being a gold medalist to end up living forgotten in poverty that is no way to treat your heroes if I would have been a prick when i went to visit Cuba i could have bought legit olympic gold medal for a couple thousand bucks and that is just sad.

That's probably the most ignorant summarised explanation of this I've ever read!
