people need to rewatch smoger tried to stop it but Kirkland took one last heavy shot for good measure and rocked sons head back. all of us watching agreed the corner was to blame, that guy was yelling at tapia telling him to bounce up and down and tapia was just standing there looking into the sky! when the bell for the 6th rung Kirkland was right there in his corner swinging, tapia didn't even leave his corner

Should have been stopped in round 5.

Calling the doctor over twice means their were legitiamte concerns. Horrible to let a 23yo fighter take a beating like that in a non title fight.

I am usually a big Smoger fan and not to take the blame completely off of him because he deserves his share, but so does the Dr and Tapias corner. A one punch ko Is one thing but a sustained beating, as we all know, Is another. This kid needs some time off and If and when he returns he will need two or three beatable opponents before he gets back In there with a live body. The match making was questionable at this stage In his career.

Correct, cornermen are emotionally invested in their fighters while referees and doctors are supposed to be neutral.

Steves mistake was not grabbing the agressor! To many refs move in on the guy whos getting beat instead of the dominate fighter and backing him off!
Equally important was the kids management taking on a fighter like Kirkland. At 23 with a handfull of fights the kid had no need to fight a guy like Kirkland at this stage of his career. Really bad choice of an opponent for the kid. Ray

Those last two shots Kirkland was able to land after stoping the fight were the most damaging he was out on his feet. If your going to step in and stop the fight you better make sure no more shots are fired, a good example is the referee in Stevensons fight last week.
