Legacy wise a martinez fight does wayyy more for cotto than a Canelo fight.
If he loses to Canelo, of course it does nothing for his legacy. But if he beats Canelo (probably by KO, the cards will be filled out in advance) it also won't do much for legacy since Canelo will be done and consigned to scrapheap
Proof? It's called being an insider. They'll announce it once Richard decides to announce it, which will likely be tomorrow. Cotto yet to sign the PPV contract, last minute numbers were being crunched, but the fight itself is set.
