Earl, it's not that old school sluggers are not effective, it's that the mentality of top fighters is different now. Talent is still trumps style and a talented slugger still beats a less talented boxer and vice versa. The difference is today's mentality. It used to be that if you had superior talent than your opponent you went out there to BEAT your opponent: In other words you played to win. Nowadays the mentality is if you have superior talent you go out there and play not to lose. It's a really bad ethos that has crept into boxing (and really into most sports these days). Not sure where it comes from but it's the kind of mentality that ultimately kills sports.
Will "boring styles" eventually kill boxing?

Actually, the Giants were known as the "Jersey Snore" back then and most fans would change the channel when they played. Sorry, but some of us were actually living and watching back then.I agree. Some "fans" don't watch the sport to see who wins & enjoy it like you would do other sports like Basketball or football. For example. You don't call the old Giants football team boring & dismiss their wins because Lawrence Taylor dominated & they won games 3-0 or 10-0 every Sunday. You appreciate the great defense they played. Some of the dumb a$$ fans are on here at it again. Acting like offense is the only part of boxing.
I will say it again DUMB A$$ fans are hurting boxing. But nothing will ever kill the sweet science.Comment

nothing will even kill boxing. there's no such thing of boring styles. thats just jealousy and hate. boxing is a all around skilled sport. some fighters have it and some don't. the majority of the black fighter ' who are faster with their feet and hands are more skilled . and thats when the racist hate comes in. i'm a proud mexican but i'm not one to bring culture in anything. it does'nt matter what race you are. i'm looking at it as boxing. its mighty funny how the black fighters get all this racist hate and jealousy.yet they are the one that are champions with bigger purses.
yes there is, just look at rigo and ward or floyd they are defensive fighters who dont sell or are liked by the fans because of the fighting style they chosed. If i dont agree with your opinion is not jealousy or hate its the truth. you also say black fighters get all the hate and they also the get the biggest purse, well then answer me this. who else besides floyd gets payed that much fightin that way. some people like boxers and 12 rd fights, while others like me prefer brawlers and exciting kos.Comment

That's a myth because they are all among the highest paid fighters in their respective divisions. You don't dish out millions (or in Rigo's case hundreds of thousands) to a fighter that there is no demand for.yes there is, just look at rigo and ward or floyd they are defensive fighters who dont sell or are liked by the fans because of the fighting style they chosed. boxing has turned from a fighting sport into "tag, you're it". its the sissification of mankind. people actually complain in boxing that fighters actually get hurt. duh, two dudes are trying to hit each other more than the other guy hits him.Originally posted by poet682006Quote:

Obviously right now boxing does good based on the fact that most of us grew up with it in the 80's and 90's, but what comes after us? The next generation don't seem to care.
Boxing is evolving, and it's becoming more and more popular for boxers who have a style of winning without having a fight. This style is becoming more effective.
The old school brawlers and sluggers are not as effective, the violence and entertainment is getting rarer.
Casuals want to see blood and guts, two guys trading, brutal ko's, and it's the casuals who buy PPV, while hardcore fans watch on streams most of the time
You look at the guys on top, and coming through and they are the opposite of that

One thing I noticed from watching a recent Chavez fight, one of the reasons American fighters seem so boring is becuz they don't have that kind of support from the fans... They just flat out don't...
I mean, in the first couple rounds, Chavez was barely landing little pitty patty punches that didn't appear to do any damage... But every time he did, the crowd ROARED... and I mean ROARED
It made the fight seem so much more exciting than it actually was...
American fighters don't have that... Bradley - Abregu is a perfect example... The guy put the work on Abregu who has proven to be a pretty solid fighter as of late, but other than a few select head snapping punches, you hardly heard the crowd peep... And it wasn't like he was punching, but he just got no support
THAT is the difference in my opinionComment

HBO didn't even show the undercards in last week's fight, which basically says they'll get more ratings showing their regular programming.
It's not only about networks, most of the seats in the stadium were empty. If that doesn't indicate anything, I don't know what does.
