One of the startling things about GGG is that he looks kind of like Davy Jones. Except this Davy Jones swallowed the Jekyll and Hyde formula and takes names. The fact that they're even backing an Eastern Euro like this is pretty ****ing baffling, power or no. There have been plenty of brilliant eastern boxers but until recently they've been relegated to undercards at best. Even more shocking is that their investment appears to be paying off. No matter what kind of power GGG has I never thoought people would back him this quickly.
And to be perfectly honest, even though GGG is an excellent fighter, he's not THAT exciting, I mean he's no Pacman and he doesn't have the looks of Canelo. We as fans know he's excelent, but there is nothing about him that indicates he has star potential. Yes, he has a lot of KO power and casuals love that, but a lot of boxers have great KO power and people don't tune in just to see it.
Just imagine if in 2007 I told you the next boxing superstar was going to be a momma's boy/geeky looking guy from Kazakhstan.Comment

I'm not going to lie..... now you have me thinking and bring up a good point. The fact that they're even backing an Eastern Euro like this is pretty ****ing baffling, power or no. How the hell did he get such a damn jump?
His style is nice, but people like Pacquiao or Rios got the exciting style that keeps casuals interested throughout the fight.
Not saying Golovkin doesn't... but.... don't know how to explain it. Pac with his offensive fluries and Rios taking a beating while giving a beating.
The KOs and damage he doles out get people excited too.
Is this the result of being active?
I'm starting to think it is. He was on HBO 4 times in a little over a year and we've seen the exponential rise of his popularity.
Seriously....his debut numbers more than doubled in a year and I'm starting to think it's activityLast edited by Hougigo; 11-11-2013, 01:59 AM.Comment

It's the brutal manner in his style. He's basically got that classic KO style of a heavyweight but in a smaller, more skilled package. If Golovkin fights went 12 rounds with mostly jabs thrown, few people would care.Comment

HBO went with the Gregg Popovich approach. Sign foreign players because they work harder than young Americans. Ever wonder why San Antonio Spurs' roster is filled with foreign players? Popovich believes the foreigners work harder and aren't babied and coddled from day 1.
While Americans...if you have an up and coming olympic boxer or just a flashy young boxer...they are constantly surrounded by yes men and get everything they want. Same with young future star basketball players. They get paid by future agents and all that stuff and perhaps gives them the impression that those material things will always be there.
2 different types of mentality.
European players like Manu/Dirk/Parker/Rubio etc. have been playing pro ball with grown men their whole lives lol, I think Parker was pro at 15. Many schools don't have school sports like bball there, instead just clubs that they sign up for. Trust me I know lol.
I'm surprised they're not pumping out more stars tbh.Comment

He's not all out action, but he's scary as **** to watch in action. It's not like he will just follow you like Donaire on the offensive, he keeps that jab pumping and throws soft shots to try to set you up.Comment

This is good for sport, for box. This is business just, this is my dream.
