Ether one I'm happy with,Canelo would probably be a better fight, but beating Martinez for lineal MW would be huge

I think at this stage - Sergio offers maybe a little less cash - but more prestige and is more winnable. All things being equal - prime for prime - Cotto would kill Canelo. Canelo is now prime - Cotto on the downslide AND there is no way - short of a KO that Cotto will win on the cards.

If Haymon was able to secure Trout a 11-1 scorecard - in NYC - there is no way GBP is going to allow Canelo to go 0-2.

Besides, beating Canelo means nothing, he's just some mexican red-head now, a novelty. Mayweather will always get the credit - Cotto if he won, they would just just say that Canelo was never that good and exposed by Mayweather. The guy just got schooled 12-0 and they still almost robbed Mayweather. Cotto will have to get a 10 count - have Canelo verbally quit - and score a knock down in a minimum of two rounds just to earn a draw.

Against Martinez, I don't think any shenanigans would be at play

If the answer is yes then maybe he can beat both. I see him loosing to both though.

Cotto is still the 3rd biggest draw in boxing. If he beats Martinez he can get a bigger share of the pot against the ginger. Both fights are tough fights for Cotto.

Whichever challenge Miguel chooses, I'm good with. After the Margarito bout I felt I'd witnessed his last major win, and I haven't seen anything to change that opinion. After beating a lesser opponent I don't even mind that promoters are selling us the illusion of his relevance so they can cash in on his name. I'm just glad the man himself can cash out with a big pay-day.
