Sampson Lewkowicz, adviser to WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28KOs), is putting together a backup plan for his boxer. Martinez's handlers were trying to secure a fight with former three division champion Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31KOs) on June 7th, but the Puerto Rican boxer was recently offered over $10 million dollars to face Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-1-1, 30KOs) in the headline bout of a March 8th Showtime pay-per-view.
With Cotto possibly taking a fight with Canelo, Lewkowicz is already putting another scenario in place. An offer has been made to Martinez's mandatory challenger, Marco Antonio Rubio (58-6-1, 50KOs). The fight with Rubio would take place in a stadium in Argentina, and Lewkowicz admits that HBO would likely not be involved.
