Medically induced would be a better way to put it. The doctors found a blood clot so they put him in a coma with his consent to avoid complications.

Last I heard he has had part of his skull removed and won't be fighting again.

That's sad.

I wish Mago the best. At the end of the day, these fighters are also performers/entertainers and they try to entertain the crowd. He put up a spirited effort and people should appreciate that and show him love and support. Sad that this won't change people's views on fighters quitting. Even then, the real fans of the sport understand what fighters put themselves through.

if true... i wish him the best and a speedy recovery. He put on a good fight and a valiant effort on Saturday. It's crazy how highly HBO tends to praise brutal fights, yet seem to neglect the possible negative outcomes such wars can produce. Hope they would respect technical boxers such as Rigo amongst others as much as they praise the brawlers they tend to gush over.

For those who are blaming the corner, remember it is the referee's call to stop a fight as evidenced in the Cotto-Foreman and Provodnikov-Alvarado bouts. In those particular fights, the corners wanted those fights stopped but was overruled by these tyrant refs. I think that rule needs to be changed because a lot of fighters could risk serious and permanent injury because of it.

For example, Arthur Mercante Jr. cleared out the ring after the Yuri Foreman's corner conceded the fight, by waving the white towel and throwing it the ring but Mercante Jr. Ignored it and let the bout proceed anyway. The same goes for Mike Alvarado; His corner wanted to stop the fight but the referee Tony Weeks simply ignored them and asked the fighter directly whether or not he wanted to continue. That is dangerous because Alvarado could have been seriously hurt, had he answered the bell and came out for that 11th round.

Removing part of the skull is standard procedure for operating on the brain. Might be a small piece with the diameter of an inch. Needles to say, he won't be fighting for a long time.

He almost definitely won't be fighting again, and to Hell with any commission that grants him a license. I wouldn't want him to go broke, but in my opinion, it would be irresponsible and dangerous for anyone who has suffered a brain injury to box on. I hope Mago recovers fully and becomes a trainer or something else in the sport.

In HW matches they should be more strict about stopping the fight if a fighter is clearly diminishing.

Ref should look closely for any of the following:

- fighter's received punishment is increasing
- fighter's offensive output is going down
- visible damage on fighter's face
- fighter is slowing down

i understand and appreciate that fighters need to be protected, but you're tlaking about stuff that happens in virtually every hard fight. this is boxing, after all. guys take punishment, slow down, bruise and swell in the face, in virutally every hard fight. you can't stop them on those grounds alone, unfortunately. perez fit all of those criteria as well, for instance.


it was impossible to know that abdusalamov was going to be in such bad shape. i thoguht the fight should be stopped around round nine,and wouldn't let him go out after 10 if it was a 12 round fight. the damage could have very well been done before then. i would have saved him from a round or two, but we cannot say if i would have saved his career.

Watched the fight Sunday morning and was elated on how great a fight this turned out to be. I've followed Abdusalamov for several years and have marveled his entertaining 'fan friendly' style, even though it was evident, that this kind of style usually doesn't allow career longevity...

Thoughts whilst watching this fight: "now this is what a good hw fight looks like...it's about time we get classic fight like this."

Also, was very impressed with "Irish" Mike Perez slick boxing and laser like precision in his punching (I guess he really didn't have a 'hard target' to find).

Having said that, I'm really upset about Abdusalamov. He fought a great fight against a much more polished and skilled opponent and gave it his all. It's sad that he's now fighting for his life and his future health is hanging in the balance.

I wish him only the best and speediest recovery. If he doesn't box again but has all his senses then that's the best case scenario in my mind

I know what you mean. I watched the fight again and Magomed actually did a hell of a job trying to fight back. It would've felt wrong to stop him because he always had that puncher's chance, and he trained so hard for the opportunity, you don't want to deny him that fair shot. His face looked really bad--but that happens in a lot of fights. Sometimes bad things happen and that's just a part of the game.

I can't really fault the ref or anyone in this particular fight. But the ref in the Wach - Klitschko fight, Eddie Cotton, he really should've stopped it earlier. The shots looked so brutal and yet Wach wasn't seriously harmed. I guess the guy is just genetically blessed with physical resilience.

Its a bit naive to blame the corner or ref for not stopping the fight. Benjy did a fine job except for that terrible point deduction.

Mago was landing BOMBS here and there into the late rounds and I think even won the 9th..so its easy to look back and say it should have been stopped, but in the heat of it I doubt his grave condition could be predicted by anyone.
