As long as he has the guys to fight there it will work out just fine, and if he has longevity like those guys it would be very impressive. Long term success in this sport is always impressive because it is very rare, that is the long route to the top though those guys were viewed highly but were never viewed as the top guy until very deep into their career's.
In the near term if he wants to be considered the top guy in the sport he needs to beat Ward probably, but if he doesn't fight him no big deal no one is required to move up.
Plus using Ward as an example he is viewed very highly without moving up, now there hasn't been much at 175 until recently and 168 was hotter so it really just depends but Golovkin has a lot of quality work left he can do at 160 so he should be able to advance pretty far based on that.
