GGG calls the shots not the other way around. So if he says he wants to get in the ring with some top up and coming talent instead of fighting the bum of the month club types ie Proska, Ishida, Rosado, Macklin. I am pretty damn sure HBO or his promoter would be happy to a oblige him.

There is no 'top up and coming talent'. Stevens was the best that could be made for this date. Everyone else in the MW top 10-15 was pre-booked, injured, with SHO, had visa issues (Murray) or banned (Mundine). Mora mighta been a possibility but that was just about it apart from Stevens.

Still, Curtis was a Golden Gloves winner, brings speed and KO power and local support, so it oughtta be a fun fight while it lasts. Certainly he'll be the first opponent of GGGs who is known as a KO puncher, and he seems to have brought his power down from 168/75, so I think it'll be an OK test - I give Stevens a better chance than I gave Macklin, and GGG can't afford to take Stevens lightly.

Stevens seems to be on a good roll and is probably at his best. But it is so hard to forget he lost to Jesse ****ing Brinkley. And he barely got by Derrick Findley. He is simply not at GGG's level in every way. This fight won't go 6 rounds. GGG by emphatic KO.
