He's ranked number 3 by the WBC and I'm sure he's in the top 10 of at least one of the other ranking bodies. He needs to gradually step up. He can't go from fighting Nick Firtha to Bernie Steverne in his next fight IMO. We discussed this yesterday, he should be facing someone durable like -Kev- Johnson, Dom Guinn or even Marius Wach.
I've noticed that posters here either label Wilder as a hype job, or, as being unprepared to step up. I think he's capable of beating some decent opposition and he should be put in a position to. The tomato can route has got to stopLast edited by BostonGuy; 10-29-2013, 09:34 AM.Comment

I think a fight with Stiverne would be a crazy gamble at this stage, you're **** on about him needing a sterner test. Shame there isnt a Bert Cooper, Mark Wills, Ollie McCall type fighter out there for him. He's ranked number 3 by the WBC and I'm sure he's in the top 10 of at least one of the other ranking bodies. He certainly has the most deceiving record in the heavyweight division. I don't know how he can be taken seriously at his age, not having fought anyone who can fight back. I mean Firtha actually made him stumble a bit and he's no prize fighter....
I agree with the bulk of the posts here that if he gets put in with anybody decent, he may be in for a lot of trouble. Right now he's taking a path similar to that of a Mayweather, builiding up his perfect record by fighting lower class boxers. Floyd eventually fought some decent competition but never the strongest competition, even after obtaining his championship belts. Floyd is a skilled fighter but I think he set a business oriented precident by avoiding the strongest competition in their prime.
It's a cowardly way to retain an unbeaten record even if it is the smart move financially. Wilder is following a similar path and unless he starts facing some decent opponents soon, he will always remain questionable and will never be considered in the league of the greatest boxers ever, or even today because of a reluctance to fight the best.
I know a lot of people probably disagree but I don't think Mayweather should be in the pantheon of legendary fighters either because of the time between fights and his reluctance to fight Manny Pacquiao in his prime. Back in the day this kind of behavior by Mayweather and now Wilder wouldn't even be tolerated. You would be called a phony and people would discredit you immediately. As far as Wilder is concerned, just think of the fights that the greatest heavyweights had been through by his age. Everyone from Joe Louis to Larry Holmes to George Foreman to Muhammad Ali to Evander Holyfield were never afraid to step in the ring with the best when expected to do so.Comment
