I don't care what the keyboard cowards think. I don't criticize Alvarado for his decision. His corner had already made the decision to stop the fight before the referee asked Alvarado if he wanted to continue. Alvarado's answer was a mere formality.

Unlike Victor Ortiz, who quit against Maidana simply because he didn't like getting hit, Alvarado fought bravely. He had no chance of winning the fight and was simply going to take more and more punishment. His corner knew it and they were going to make the right decision before the referee came to the corner.

Quite a few people on this site have "laced them up" not on a Bradley or Alvarado level but that's not the point... When you stop wanting to fight because your ass is getting whooped its called QUITTING... No other word for it. You were in competition, the game was not over, you were losing badly.. And you decided to .... QUIT. Forfeit. Whatever you want to call it. F0ck all that "if you're not in his shoes, etc.." Bs. He took the easy way out. Bradley could've done the same and maybe should've, regardless of what the cards read but he didn't thats the difference.

They told him that too, but the ref said he wanted to hear it from the fighter. Even if Alvarado had wanted to continue, his trainer was not going to allow it. He had about as much choice in decidiing if he wanted to continue as Manny Pacquaio has in choosing his opponents. I am one of the biggets critics of quitters like Roberto Duran, Acelino Freitas and Victor Ortiz who walk away because they no longer want to absorb punishment. This was not that kind of situation.

I think I will criticise this article as well and not because I'm a "keyboard warrior" or dislike the way the fight ended. Alavarado did indeed quit but it was obvious he was getting hurt and could no longer carry on. Yes many of the toughest boxers of the last 30 years may well have continued on but not everyone is a Gatti or Ali. It just doesn't work like that so I have no problem with Alvarado, he was beaten by the better man. End of.

What's wrong with this article is that the writer treats the fans of the sports as if they are infantile. That is not the case. Many boxing fans have put on a pair of gloves and taken a beating for their troubles, others, like me, only write about it but we all understand the sport. We all know what goes into being a top competitor and we have ALL seen many men fight on with badly scarred faces or broken bones. It is within all our rights to express our opinions about the fighters we watch. Without our viewing figures, ticket buys or TV viewership, many of these athletes would not have the money or adulation they so dearly crave.

I'll end with a little non-boxing story, when a certain Brian Charles Lara, one of the greatest cricketers to ever grace a 22 yard pitch, retired, he simply asked his fans, "Did I entertain", to which the crowd replied emphatically, "Yes!".

Athletes are there to entertain us, sports in a very large piece in the entertainment business. The main aim of an entertainer is to please the crowd, if some felt displeased by Alvarado's decision, then they are well within their rights to say so.

I read the first two pages of this thread and see how butthurt people are at the truth. Fitzsimmons said nothing but the truth here in a sarcastic tone. He called out the keyboard warriors and now they are out in full force.
