Comments Thread For: Marquez Reflects on His Decision To Box Full-Time

Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez reflects on how he left his successful accounting career behind to focus full-time on boxing. On October 12th at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Marquez will challenge undefeated Timothy Bradley for the WBO welterweight championship.

Even though you were a successful accountant in Mexico, you gave it up to focus on boxing full-time. What was the motivation behind the career switch? Is accounting something you would like to return to after boxing? [Click Here To Read More]

I hope that every person that weighs in on the opportunity to become a pro at boxing, thinks the same way as Marquez did, and like Juan Diaz. Make sure you get prepared academically, so if you don't do good in boxing, you can still search for a job in what you studied for. Excellent!

Very rare example of an educated man reaching the top in boxing... Cleverly is another one.

I still think these two Ukrainian HW PhDs remain the best example, you might have heard of them..

Marquez will go on to be a wealthy man until he's dead and gone, he is an intelligent man inside and out the ring. Pacquiao's dumbass will go broke as so. as he retires, and so will Floyd once them leeches and tricks have emptied out his bank account.

Marquez owes his fortune to Pacquiao. Without Pacquiao, he would never have made any big money.

At least this is one boxer who won't be reduced to gatekeeper status just to get a paycheck.

I completely disagree, in fact I will say ODH owes his entire retirement account to Floyd and Manny. Pacquiao was well onto becoming a star and boxing as a whole was pushing for it due to the enormous potential in the Asia markets. That's not to say ODH's fight didn't help and perhaps speed up the process. I don't believe either Floyd or Pacquaio truly ever needed ODH across from them.
