What Adjustments Do You think Matthysse Should Make?

It's clear that imposing his power alone likely will not be enough when he faces top competition, so looking for a single big shot is probably misguided. B-Hop talked about how Matthysse didn't seem to have a Plan B and I would tend to agree with that assessment. Of course, Danny busting up his eye may have prevented him from doing so, but it still looked like he was lost for most of the second half of the fight. Chris Byrd suggested that Matthysse focus a bit more on combination punching as well and I could see a need to avoid some of the looping hooks.

Matthysse was still competitive (as he has been in all of his decision losses), but I still think he has room for improvement. He has power and a pretty good chin, but he likely needs to refine his boxing skills a bit more if he wants to take the next step.

    What do you guys think?

he needs to jab and feint more. would also like to see him use more angles, be a bit less down the pipe. it felt like he was looking for knockout for the whole fight. i like matthyse but he just faced a guy who figured him out

I think somebody like Nacho is what he would have needed. I think with his chin even Roach would be a good choice for him, work on his offensive technique, someone who can teach him to use the ring better and preserve his power for key moments. He is a beast and will **** out many of the 147 fighters too if he moves up, however until he uses his power wisely with the correct approach i.e counterpunching and timing he will then become a real competitor.

He's 30 years old, taken some punishment, and lost every big fight he's been in. There aren't many improvements he can make as he's already a competent boxer/puncher. Matthysse is what he is, a B+ fighter with a big punch. If he lands a big shot you're in trouble, but against the very best, the chance of landing that fight ending punch is slim (Garcia, Judah, Alexander) etc. Matthysse only looks great against fighters with no defensive abilities and shaky chins. He may beat a Khan or Peterson, but he gets beat by anyone with any defensive nous.

It will take awhile to unlearn Matthysse's style. I don't see him adjusting much if they should fight again. The obvious adjustment would be to not lunge. Garcia caught him every time he did and he still kept doing it. The other adjustment will be almost impossible to correct but as a power puncher he has a tendency to over commit. Garcia kept punching with him so he was always out of position to defend himself. Garcia was the better boxer on Saturday night and that's why he won. He will win every time unless his chin fails and he gets caught.

Matthysse needs to work on his defense accordingly to his opponent, As Danny got the early rounds due to his punch variety, I got the impression he wanted Danny to respect him and decided to eat shot to land shots, And it backfired when his eye took damage.

He needs more head movement to duck the hook and and throw a counter hook ala Pacquiao-Hatton.

Garica tied him up alot and he wasn't throwing. He should've kept throwing like Kovalev when hes being held.

It was still a close fight especially with 1 eye and I like his chances in a rematch

Considering he was almost blind in one eye for most of the second half I think he did well to make adjustments & get himself back in the fight.

He needs to stop throwing so many single shots.

I'd like to see him jab more. He has a very good jab and it has such power its unreal but he neglected it badly.

He'd be jabbing and snapping Garcia's head back then he'd just stop jabbing his way in.

He needs more variation on the jab. Jabbing to the body, chest to set up his right hand & varying the speed of it.

                    Maybe work on feinting.

I'd say he worked this out but not until around the 9th when his eye was gone.
