Comments Thread For: Mayweather Reflects, Claims Arum Didn't Believe in Him

WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) explained some of his reasons for leaving Top Rank in 2006. While the split has been well documented, Mayweather says it took him years to figure out the behind the scenes politics and why Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, as Mayweather claims, would not allow him to face promotional stablemates Miguel Cotto and Oscar De La Hoya - when all of them were fighting under the Top Rank banner.

After becoming a free agent, Mayweather faced De La Hoya the following year in a record-breaking pay-per-view showdown. Mayweather was able to fight Cotto in May 2012, after Cotto himself became a free agent.

This is the truth. Arum is doing the same thing with Rigo right now.

What kind of voodoo does Bob Arum do that he still has his mitts in Pacman?

Pacman could have made a load of money instead reports tell us he is in financial difficulties and now will spend the later stages of his career fighting whoever in China to feed Bob Arums pockets

Like many bankrupt boxers he will end up fighting into his mid 40's

He might not have believed in your fianancial plans but not Floyd as a fighter.

Arum said he was the greatest fighter of all time at one point.

I think if floyd took a step back and was honest with himself it would be hard for anyone to believe he would be the cash cow in boxing in 2006. You can criticize Arum for not being willing to market to the african american community the way he did to the mexican and PR communities but those communities come out to support their fighters so ARum has a right to invest his money where he sees a chance to get the most money in return.

Floyd was very impatient when he was young. He knew not winning the gold cost him both in and out of the ring and he wanted to make it up as fast as he could. I can understand why he wanted the big fights so soon.

In the end, working with Al Haymon, marketing himself to the afrcan american market, and leaving TR all proved to be good business decisions that worked out far more than I think floyd even imagined.

Promoters control more than we probably realize. When a promoter says fight this guy, avoid that guy, this guy is off limits, you will make more money fighting these guys...a fighter has to follow or leave and either take the same orders from another promoter or go into business for themselves.

The promoters don't really care about legacies and the specifics of WHEN you fight a guy to build your own personal legacy. They only $ee dollar $ign$ and if they know you can make them millions without certain risks, they will maximize that. If they promote a fighter who could be your most dangerous opponent, but you are their money maker, they will not let the fight happen.

It's all about money to promoters and the fighters fight whoever they are told.

Said he was better than ALi and SRL way back when. I mean talk about irrational hype. Did floyd knock out Mike Dallas Jr.?

Cotto was pissed that Arum went to bat for Margarito after Margarito got caught cheating. Cotto leaves TR, he gets a shot at Floyd. Manny wanted that shot at Floyd before Floyd went to jail. He tried to negotiate, but Arum killed that. What happens to Manny? He loses a controversial fight to Bradley. Arum is killing the sport, not Haymon, not Floyd, not ODLH, not GBP! Bob Arum has to go!
