They tend to become charitable if anything ie they let others put them down and dont care and they dont bother to promote themselves either because they already know they are awesome and have an excess of self esteem.

So why is Mayweather so arrogant still?

Also what makes people in general arrogant?

Alot of Mayweather's success has come from being like this, He's taken on this persona to promote himself, and it has worked, lets be honest, if the guy was as nice as pie no one would give a **** about him. The majority of discussions on this forum are filled with hatred towards Floyd, that's proof right there.
      Being nice works for dlh.

Which wasn't even genuine and honest. The Golden Boy and all American nice guy to the public. A cross dressing, raging alcoholic/drug addict, and kinky sex-mongering narcissist behind closed doors. Come to think of it, had be been open about his real personality he might have made even more more; coming out to the ring in fishnets, ect.

floyd on tv is the real floyd. he grew up in a place where people act the same way he is acting right now.

its not an act, its just the way he was brought up. crackhead sr, roger, and floyd are acting their own persona.

have you ever noticed that Bob's 3 biggest clients-SRL, ODH, and Manny- are completely different from the way Bob portrays them. If Manny just kept it real-came to the ring smoking a blunt, with 3 hookers, the cash that ODH tried to give him, and his posse that beats up his political opponents-he might be making a lot more.

But he opts for humble, religious, kareeoke lounge singer FFS.

                A_Hole <> Being Popular

I don't agree with the theory that the fighter has to be hated in order to gain more attention to the fight.

There have been many mega-fights where the fighters were not hated. For example:
                - Leonard VS Hagler - this was a mega fight and both were likeable characters
                - Hearns - was confident but wan't an a_hole
                - Duran - was overconfident at times, but again wasn't an a_hole
                - Ali - put on a show of arrogance, but still wasn't an a_hole
                - Frazier - quiet nice guy
                - Foreman - badass quiet dude - but again, wasn't an a_hole
                - Tyson - did ****** things but still wasn't regarded as an a_hole

There are many, many more examples of fighters in the past and present who have captured the hearts and minds of millions of fans around the world without being an a_hole. Being an 'A_hole' is a poor excuse to spin Mayweather's lack of social skills into some kind of mass marketing campaign.

Leonard was a Gold Medalist at a time when Olympic boxing still mattered.
Hagler, Hearns and Duran had fan-friendly styles. Ali was most definitely viewed as an asshole during his time, as was Tyson. People hated Ali and many tuned in for Tyson's quick explosive KOs. Foreman was a beast KO'ing everyone and Frazier packed a mean punch. The both fought at a time when heavyweight boxing was more relevant. So you dont necessarily NEED to be an asshole to sell, but if you don't have a fan-friendly style or serious KO power like many of the people you mentioned, you are not going to be as successful as someone who does if you have a reserved personality. Mayweather does not have serious power or a fan-friendly style, so he uses this asshole alter ego to sell his fights. I see Ali as being very similar in that regard, though a much better trash talker and seems to be a better overall person. Many would call Ali's style "boring", but many also tuned in to see him get KO'd. It was that Louisville Lip that sold his fights.
