jermain wasnt a hype job at all. he is a textbook example of what happens when a fighter who came from nothing have too much success too soon and lose their drive and motivation.
taylor was really good when he fought hopkins and could have went on to become great. he was a hungry fighter who worked his ass off year round and having seen most of his early fights (unlike most ppl here) i know how much he he was improving each time out.
but then he won the title, got three big paydays in a row and got lazy. he stopped training between fights to improve his skills and boxing intelligence and just sat around getting fat. when a fight came close he would get in camp too late first of all, and then proceeded to spend the entire time just losing weight in preparation for the scale with hardly no preparation for the actual fight.
his skills declined and he started creating bad habits. showing up in poor shape made him lose much of his speed and strength and all of his stamina. as a result he fought in a different style attempting to just steal rounds while preserving energy as opposed to the "bad intentions" of old who got in there and went to work with just that.. bad intentions.
whenever ppl ask hopkins or marquez when they will retire they always say the same thing, "when they dont have the drive to pay the prize to be on top". jermain lost that but kept fighting. he lost his way but he was the real deal or at least could have been, he just didnt want it bad enough. by the time he realized his mistake his body had taken too much abuse inside and outside the ring for him to get back on track.
Sugar Ray. Thought he was all fluff. Still annoys me with those pitty-patta combinations.
Prince. Never bought in. Total clown.
Broner. Was sold. Eats up little guys. Yet to meet a big guy.
Bhop. Does nothing. But always wins.
Floyd/Whitaker. Expect them to always win. But never fight.
Pacquiao. Thought was all kamikaze. End product not...always.
It took some doing, but I think we have a clear and decisive winner for the biggest ****** on this site.
Jeff Lacy
I really thought Jeff Lacy was going to have longevity. The way he ran through his competition had me fooled. I was so excited about the Calzaghe fight, I couldn't believe my eyes. What fighter had you fooled?
If I had to name one, I guess it would be Andre Berto, but hype job is a strong term, I think he was overhyped, and I thought he would be a superstar by now, but at the same time, I think he can still get there, he only has a few losses, nothing you can't recover from.

He is a guy who failed to live up to the expectations (or network hype rather) placed upon him. The inability to live up to their own hype, by definition, would make one a hype job. Just because a guy has good skills and talent, if he eats himself out of a sport due to piss poor work ethic, how would he not be a hypejob?

a hypejob is someone who isnt for real, someone who isnt worthy of the praise. it doesnt just come down to whether they live up to te expectations or not but why.
lacy is a real hypejob, the ability was just never there. he was no good.
jermain was good, very good. everything ppl said about him was true, but ppl cant predict how someone is going to react to success. if jermain took his paydays against hopkins and retired would you call him a hypejob then? no you wouldnt.
but he might as well have retired because he wasnt putting the work in, nobody can stay on top if they arent dedicated to the sport. just like nobody can predict when someone will lose their dedication for the sport.
the focus is simply how good can they become, if the ability is never there ala lacy thats a hypejob. if someone chooses not to pay the prize to live up to the ability that truly is there thats a different story.
long story short taylor did have the goods, so he wasnt hype. it was all there, everything ppl said of him was true he just chose to throw it all away.
I honestly believed that once Cherrypicker JR got his DLH payday, that he'd go on a rampage and fight prime Cotto, prime Margarito, a younger version of Mosley...
he fooled us all and went on a vacation to duck these guys.
