Let's Settle This, Early Stoppage Or Not?

Ok, let's get this sorted, I'm hearing some saying last night was an early stoppage in the Mares/Gonzalez main event. What do you guys think? Time for a poll.

In my opinion it was an early stoppage, Mares was the champion, in a championship fight of such magnitude, you have to let it go on, imagine if the ref had stopped the fight after the first 3 KDs in Pac/JMM 1 or after Barker looked like he was finished against Geale, in fact Barker looked in worse shape after that KD than Mares in both his KDs.

The moment the ref placed his hand on Mares' shoulder, you could tell Mares was shocked, meaning he knew where he was, what had happened and what it all meant, Mares was ok. Yes he was hurt but there were less than 10 secs left in the round, Mares would have had a minute to recover and we've all seen Mares can recover. The ref was, in all honesty, quite **** last night, I reckon he'd be scared of his own shadow.

Having said that, massive cong**** to Gonzalez, a solid, long serving pro who doesn't quite get the recognition he should. I always knew it was going to be a war but I expected Mares to stop Gonzalez late but the vet came out bombing. With the BS ref stoppage, there needs to be a rematch.

I think that it was in that he should have given him more than a three count.
He said something about his eyes... I can't say anything, I wasn't in the ring with him... at least count to 8 though....

I guess he could've given him a full 10 count but I'm ok with the stoppage. Like the ref said, his eyes didn't look right, if you watch the replays his eyes were all over the place. I see where you're coming from in that it was the end of the round but I've seen much worse stoppages than this that didn't get debated at the time.

Terry O'Conner got absolutely clowned last week for letting Cleverly go back to his corner after being badly hurt at the end of the 3rd whereas Reiss is getting **** for NOT doing that.

Mares got stopped in the first round, deal with it people. There have been far worse stoppages in boxing. To me at least, it looked like Mares just couldn't deal with the power.

At least give him the 8 count, let him stand and stop it there

I had no problem with oconnor doin what he did, it was the end of the round. I don't see what the problem was. O'connor stopped the fight when it deserved to be stopped.

I'm not even a big Mares fan, I was starting to dislike him when he was being compared to a true p4p fighter in Donaire which is/was ridiculous but a bad stoppage is a bad stoppage. Especially when the man being stopped is a young, primed world champion.

I agree with this, like I said he could've given him a count, that's the only thing I have an issue with. I just don't think it would've changed much and am not certain he would've beaten the count.

I can understand why he didn't let it go on. Mares looked out of it.

JMM, Barker and a few others have looked far more out of it in their respective fights than Mares did last night. Boxing tradition dictates that a champion can't just be stopped like that unless he is absolutely out of it and can't even stand up, **** a 3 count. I bet my trainers were pissed off after last nights complete lack of refereeing professionalism.

I used Terry O'Connor as an example to show that it all depends on how you look at it. I totally see where you're coming from. From my perspective, Mares looked done and didn't seem able to deal with the power and was cluless when under attack.

I guess a rematch would answer a lot of questions, i'm definitely interested to see how that goes.

A rematch would be good but Mares might need a couple "tune up" fights. I'd still like to see Mares v Donaire at some point or even Rigo but Rigo seems to be allergic to weight gain.
