I can't believe how overrated Andre Ward is to even be in the same sentence as a prime RJJ

RJJ by KO, not sure what round

Roy puts his hands behind his back then knocks Ward out.

Well, to be fair, Jones is slightly overrated himself. I'm a big RJJ fan; but I can admit he's lauded over a bit too much for his skills.....and the incredible wins he had. What's left out quite often are the fights against the real quality boxers out there at that time that he didn't take and what might have either cemented his place or revealed his weaknesses.

Just as I have been guilty in the past of giving too much credit to older fighters, Jones has now fallen into that "myth" category.

Ward, I never did believe in that much when the super middle tourney began. Yet again and again I saw him rise to the occasion. Credit where credit is due. He fought and beat some hella competition and showed his wares. Could he beat Jones, yes, I think he could have.

                Would he?

Honestly, we'll never know. Because just because Jones didn't fight those better fightes out there, it doesn't mean he would have lost. I do believe Jones to have been a great fighter.....and great fighters generally find a way to win. So, could he have beaten Ward? Absolutely; but it's easy to say that in a sweeping "Ward doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence"...sort of epitaph.

One of my cardinal rules of thumb is that Styles Make Fights.....and I think Ward's style could have given Jones fits. Maybe not; but that's my take. Ward has proven his own worth so far......and really, moreso in a lot of ways than Jones did. Jones talent and physical ability carried him a long way; but in some ways, they cause him to be a tad bit overrated.

As fast and powerful as Jones was, I don't think he would have stood a chance against legendary fighters such as Archie Moore or Ezzard Charles. And that's because they had the skill and the style to deal with him. Ward is not a legend; but he is very, very good.....and maybe history will judge him great. Give it ten more years and ask the same question. Allow his legacy to ferment as has Jones's......'course, in ten more years, Jones will have been faster than a speeding bullet and have kicked Spiderman's ass.
