I do think he would have beaten Duran......with a few 'ifs'........like 'which era Duran, what weight, after losing the first fight', etc. I do think the $$ would have gotten Mayweather to WW much more quickly than he did get there.....but his stops at 135-140 would have been MUCH different......

Someone commented about Mayweather beating Hagler......First, he wouldn't have fought Hagler, second, if you're talking about the shop-worn guy that fought Leonard.......yea, he probably does. But any version of Hagler before around 85 KO's Floyd.

Hearns would be his toughest fight by far.......without the power to damage Hearns or the killer instinct that guys from that era have, he wouldn't be able to do much at all with Hearns. Maybe he's forced to be more a finisher in that era?? But even then would have had a very hard time touching Hearns...

Benitez and Leonard are MAJOR tests for Mayweather.......I think they are toss-ups.

Duran is right about Mayweather's competition to the extent that at the top, it's not there. But he's wrong about how good he is and how he stacks up. I think he is thrown into the conversation, but similar to Benitez, unfairly he would be an after thought when talking of the 'Big Four'..........

If I can't use draws, and you take the best of that era if Floyd turns pro at 130 in 76........I say it looks something like this:
    Floyd SD Arguello 130
    Duran UD Mayweather 135
    Mayweather SD Duran 135
    Mayweather UD Pryor 140
    Mayweather SD Benitez
    Hearns KO10 Mayweather
    SRL SD Mayweather

IF Floyd chose to fight at 160, which would be a stretch......
Hagler KO12 Mayweather (if 85 or before, if after, Mayweather UD by NOT engaging. Just don't think that one legitimately happens)

De La Hoya was a draw?? Ok, I question if Duran is a little punchy on that one....but.......

Whoever talked smack about a Duran being a 'quitter' because he felt Leonard was making a mockery of the sport, wasn't there to fight,..........whatever version you use as to the reason Duran walked off, anyone who thinks Roberto Duran was a quitter with no fortitude KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT DURAN and is a pure idiot.

He BEAT Leonard the first time when Leonard DID fight him........he ran the second fight, used pot-shots and played games. I think Duran was out of shape and not properly prepared. If he had been and Leonard had legitimately wanted to fight, it's much different.....because he didn't. It was a pure joke....Leonard over did it, it's one thing to outbox someone, but to humiliate and run?? Duran could have gone dirty with nut shots and dragged Leonard into the gutter........but he respected the sport more than that.......

But if you think he was physically damaging Duran, hurting him or anywhere near knocking him out,......you're an idiot too. He never got close enough to do those things. The bolo bull**** and pitty-pat shots Leonard landed did NOTHING but impress the school-girl type broadcasters and judges

And if you think Duran somehow lacks heart, you're an even bigger idiot.

If Duran retires after the first Leonard fight, he goes down as first ballot HOF, Greatest LW all-time that, oh, by the way, beat the best WW of his era and top 5 all-time WW too......
Yeah, Duran gets down but stop justifying him quitting. Leonard, yeah showboated 1 round but he was tagging Duran. How was he mocking the sport? Duran quit cause Ray wouldn't fight HIS fight. That's not Leonard's job to cater to Duran's style. Dude stop.

Then again, casuals say a lot of things.
manny has alot more epic fights than floyd...

the fights that manny had with mab em and jmm trump anything that floyd has ever done....
Manny has a proven track record of fighting the very best, especially at the lower weights....

Its pretty sad if you Google image the word " Chicken" you will see in images a pic of Floyd Mayweather! :WORD: Thats messed up! Just saying...it is what it is.
Let us know when you come up with real criticisms in the ring about Floyd, lmao.

Yes floyd would beat out of shape partying duran.....

floyd would stand no chance vs duran of the 70's

people only think of duran 80's but that was past his prime, he was just a big name..

similar to oscar and shane in the 2000's... Big names but past their primes...

wont stop people 20 years from now saying shane and oscar were bums, they lost all their big fights to cotto, floyd, hopkins, and manny

Thats easy. hes a bum. A step under Berto. Boring to watch. A coward. A cheat. A PED user. A running pot shot throwing cherry picking lame.

Even the ATGs of the sport agree!

                  • Floyd would've been great in any era. I favor a prime Duran over a prime Floyd. Duran demolished everyone in the lightweight division and was already a legend before he beat Leonard. Leonard had already beat Mayweather Sr who fought similar to Floyd. Duran was a different animal and if Floyd thought Cotto and Castillo were good pressure fighters he has no idea how difficult it would've been to keep a prime Duran off of him. Hand speed jab and power was all there.

                    • Duran Overstates His Case

Its possible this is a translation issue. Statements get mangled in translation and nuance is lost very often. I doubt RD meant to say Floyd would be some kind of club fighter in the '70s. But, there is no way he would go undefeated for 16 years from say '72 to '88 fighting championship level at 130-154. That would take a level of cherry-picking that was not possible in the WBC/WBA era.

His skills are fantastic but without that 0 on the end of his record he wouldn't have the same mystique he enjoys today. Duran (in translation) overstates it, but his basic message stands.
