  • Comments Thread For: Gamboa vs. Redkach Clash Could Produce Fireworks

Miguel Vazquez. Antonio DeMarco. Richar Abril.

These are a handful of fighters who have been discussed as possible opponents whom world title belt holder Yuriorkis Gamboa could possibly face later this year.

Including other known lightweights, these are all intriguing bouts for Gamboa. However, there is a lightweight who is not known globally, but could give Gamboa all he could handle.

    That fighter is Ivan Redkach.

While some wonder who is Redkach, others may wonder what the Russian-born fighter could give in the ring that would give Gamboa a challenge.

Some media and fans may still not be sold on this fight. However, boxing has seen head-scratching match-ups be put together. If Gamboa-Redkach is ever made, it would not be bad for boxing.

As Larry Merchant has often said, “Boxing is the theatre of the unexpected.”

It just might be in this situation.
So a world champion who should've been against elite competition years ago facing a guy who is unproven and has beaten nobody at all is good for boxing just because you never know what might happen?

gamboa is a complete fraud. exactly like floyd. ducked rios and fought nothing but bums since. at least his strategy isn't working like it did for floyd. people aren't falling for it again.

        What a joke.

I gave him a pass with Perez but this potential match-up is a huge waste of time and effort. I've been waiting for years to see Gamboa in a big match-up but I think the time has come to give up on him, at 31 he ain't getting any younger.

Gamboa is the real deal even with his flaws. Remember when Juanma was the kingpin of the feather weight division and Gamboa was an up an comer, ever time they fought common opponents, Gamboa had alot easier time dispatching of the same guys Juanma struggled with. Gamboa has a great chance to beat anyone in the world at lightweight because of his supreme hand speed and foot work, a punchers mentality with good power, good ring savvy, good inside and outside game dispite having short arms, his foot speed helps him get in and out so well. Everyone talks about his penchant for being dropped in fights, thats not good but at least he knows how to get up off the canvas and win fights. Alot of fightrr dont know how they will resond to being dropped.

come on man. he wanted no part of rios. at least he didn't go into retirement like floyd but he doesn't seem to want to fight anyone good either so it's basically a retirement from fighting good competition.

Considering how Lopez didn't beat that many top opponents and ended up losing his last 3 worthwhile fights, I don't think doing better than him at FW means you're the real deal at lightweight. At one point it seemed like Lopez and Gamboa were both elite-level guys and were on a collision course which Gamboa would win. But that was years ago now and while FW, SFW and LW have changed a lot since then Gamboa seems to be in exactly the same place, only now he's older and a lot less people are interested.

The other hot potential matchup back then was Kirkland-Angulo. Both those guys have had KO losses and served time in prison and yet neither seems to have wasted as much time as Gamboa has. Maybe that's not all his fault but still, you can't rate someone based upon them showing potential several years ago and nothing since.

Besides, the best win on either Lopez or Gamboa's resume is Daniel Ponce De Leon, who Lopez beat much quicker and easier.

Probably is true that Gamboa has lost his better years when he had his problems with the promoters but some few, mainly Cubans, had the character to confront their promoters for a fair price. Gamboa has said that he was willing to fight Rios but for a right purse. The same happened to Franco when he denied to fight for $10,000 for a Belt fight ( mainly a fast food part time salary). Something similar is happening also with Rigondeaux that has been asking for a biggest share os the revenues with Arum. The problem is that the other boxers has no respect for theirselves and accept any coins for the fight. Gamboa did right at that time with Rios, even thought now has a price to pay when the promoters have been blocking him to get good fighters

Gamboa and Gary Russell Jr. are nearly in the same boat, at this point of their careers. If I see "Russell vs TBA" one more time, I swear.

Anyhow, we've waited years to see Gamboa in big fights, but he's only managed to show us his flaws against sub par (or unknown) opponents. Not a good look...
