Good shout on Ouma and PDL. My 3rd pick would be Nigel Benn, not so much in terms of poverty but the fact that he had to fight racist thugs everyday, and his brother got killed by one.
There are some 3rd world places in America though. Kassim wasn't shot in Uganda, even though he was forced to be a child solder. Then he came to the great USA and got shot twice in Florida.
america does not have pervasive, inescapable poverty and violence on the scale of the developing nations of the world.
there is no comparing a slum in america to a slum in the third world.
