Lots of black people didn't really like him he made it harder on them on in some black people's mind by sleeping with white woman and just his attitude in general many blacks didn't approve of whites either they hated each other for different reasons but still. Black people a lot of time thought he thought he was too good for them causing trouble by moving in white people's neighborhoods and all that kinda crap so yes at some points he made strives for black people but something's he did weren't so helpful either.

If you ask me I never thought he did anything great for the black community at the time he was champion of the world and behaved how ever he wanted and white people took it out and blacks not only because he beat them but he was kinda a jack ass too sure he was own man as he put it but there's a time and place for everything.

Johnson is the number one Heavyweight of all time, in my humble (and twisted) opinion.

I knew about him from before my 10th birthday & I'm from London but when I went to Galveston to see if there was a statue or books or ANYTHING about him there was nothing.

No, there's actually a street in the poor black part of town named after him.

I went to a bookstore there & asked the bloke if they had any books on Jack Johnson & he'd never heard of him. In Galveston!!!

It is sad from a boxing prespective. But jack should be in history
Books just like slavery and segregation are.
Its the bridge between the two. Nowadays white woman and black men and vice versa are together everywhere. Thank jack johnson for that, he is one of the first and. He is THE FiRST to do it publicly .
Anyone interacially dating or married should know who he is ,kids at schools as well IMO

He wasn't televised like the other two, and didn't have such a vast media outlet. A no brainer bro-ham.

There have been bi-racial relationships since there were people of different races.

Oh, you mean here in America - the Land of the Free. Yes, we frowned upon that until the last decade or so.

He was married to a black woman when very young and it was an instant failure so he "swore off". He then concentrated on white women of whom he married 3 I think. One was actually a socialite. It ended very badly-she committed suicide.

Well since you're talking about casual fans it's easy. He last fought nearly 80 years ago. You can barely find footage of him on youtube. There are active boxers today that are less known than Ali and Tyson. They are 2 of the most popular boxers ever. Ali has an Oscar nominated movie about his life. Tyson has documentaries and is on Broadway. You start talking Gene Tunney, Harry Wills and Sam Langford and most casual fans will start drawing blanks. Same thing applies with Jack Johnson. Jack Dempsey may be the most recognizable fighter from that era. I think people may know a little more about him but again that was a long time ago and boxing isn't a mainstream sport anymore.
