  • Comments Thread For: Canelo's Coach: Catch-Weight Will Backfire on Mayweather

According to trainer and manager Edison Reynoso, WBC/WBA 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KO) will be even faster for his scheduled fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KO) on September 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The fight is taking place at a catch-weight of 152-pounds. Reynoso claims Mayweather was the one who demanded a catch-weight in order to finalize the fight, but he believes the weight of 152 will backfire on the pound-for-pound king - because the trainer says Canelo will be a lot faster due to the lower weight.

Of course it will. Your fighter will have a 20 pounds advantage on fight night.

The catchweight issue was over-discussed already.

We are looking forward to the moment when discussion will hit the boxing shoes issue...

I'm already tired of hearing about the 2 pound catch-weight and the fight is still over 2 months away.

Speed is only 1 aspect needed to beat Mayweather. And he may be faster at 152, but if he blows up too much after the weigh-in, will that in turn slow him down a bit???? Any boxers on here that can shed light on that?

If Canelo comes in at 170+ on fight night, it will not be to his advantage.

His camp seems to be confused. On one hand, Canelo is supposed to be the bigger, stronger fighter, which many seem to believe will enable him to hurt Floyd. On the other hand, Canelo's going to be working with a nutritionist and laying off the hamburgers so that he can be lighter and faster and less muscular.

            Which one is it?

Canelo weighed in for the Trout fight at 153.5. A pound and a half isn't meaningless, but if Canelo's team thinks making 152 is going to mean that he comes into the ring with more speed to actually matter against a fighter like Floyd, I hope they have a plan B, C and D come fight night.

The catch weight may back fire on Canelo. He hasn't weighed in under 154 in a while so It may take a little more then he thinks to get down to 152 now, and they really need to stop talking about Canelo being fast. He has good speed but even If he was a little faster than usual it's not like Canelo has a high output he's not going to throw 60-100 punches per round specially not against Floyd where he'd be countered to death. Whats going to end up happening If they focus too much on speed is Canelo won't have the punching power he typically would have otherwise and it may even disrupt his timing..

I disagree. For starters Canelo's chances are already slim to none but I think If Canelo comes in 170+ his chances are better then they would be If he tries to come into the ring at say 163-5 because he would be closer to Floyd's size which would not be good for him because Floyd will be able to handle him more physically, he probably even stops him but at 170+ Floyd would have to pot shot and focus more on avoiding Canelo which may give him more opportunities.. He's not gonna beat Floyd trying to match him in speed he even said he could outbox Floyd

I'm starting to think Canelo team wanted the catch weight. First Oscar saying that the cw would give advantage to Canelo. Now this.
