This is were the nickname 'Sweet Pea' came from

As a youngster, Whitaker was known to friends and family as "Pete" and when he began to emerge as a top amateur, fans in his hometown of Norfolk used to serenade him with chants of "Sweet Pete." This was misinterpreted by a local sportswriter as "Sweet Pea." When this erroneous report came out in the local newspaper, the new nickname stuck.

Whitaker could clown most of Floyd's opponents too. Including Manny, a guy Floyd was hesitant to fight.

You knocked Mayweather's opposition, I simply said Pernell Whitaker hit the canvas quite a few times against the kind of opposition Floyd would have hardly got touched against, after all the topic here is defense. You pretty much shot yourself in the leg, but that doesn't surprise me cause plenty of people are hateful enough that they can't be unbiased to make a point. Changing the subject, bringing up Nelson, Oscar and Tito made your argument so much weaker considering no one is debating who had the better resume, Pernell Whitaker obviously has the better resume. I actually watched his career set again not too long ago so don't even think you can educate me, it's you who needs to pay attention.

In my opinion Mayweather> Whitaker>> Leonard.

I have Floyd ahead of Whitaker because I believe his defense is more varied, it allows him more room to adapt when faced with different styles.

That being said these topics annoy me. It's as clear as the difference between night and day that Floyd and Pernell are in the same ball park in terms of defense, but fools in this thread act as though it is sacrilegious for someone to rate Floyd higher. It's as though the man shouldn't be complimented, the hate runs deep.
