Comments Thread For: Sergio Martinez Hits NYC, Plans To Meet With HBO

New York, NY - Middleweight kingpin Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez (51-2-2, 28KO's) touched down in NYC early yesterday, and will spend the week here, attending a number of business meetings before heading to Canastota for this weekend's annual International Boxing Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.

"I am honored to be invited again to the International Boxing Hall of Fame, and I am looking forward to participating in the weekend's festivities and meeting all of the boxing fans that will be in attendance," said the WBC champion and one of boxing's top pound-for-pound fighters in the world Martinez. Martinez will attend the weekend festivities with promoter Lou DiBella and longtime advisors Sampson Lewkowicz and Nathan Lewkowicz.

I love Maravilla, but I think we have seen his peak, and his best days are now behind him, unfortunately. At his age, considering his style, and the injuries he has been plagued with lately, I almost wish he would go ahead and hang them up.

I expect Martinez to be inducted into the Hall of Fame someday.

Be a good boy and fight Golovkin next (assuming he beats Macklin).

in the middleweight division, yes he has.

i think that 234-5-2 record for his last seven opponents is the best in boxing right now, not too sure though.

not sure if the wbc will let martinez have another voluntary defense in his next fight, or enforce his mandatory on him (think it's rubio as of now). judging from his last performance and the injuries that happened in that fight, i wouldn't mind seeing martinez take on murray again, or someone like lee (since dibella could easily make that fight).
if a murray rematch isn't in sight, hopefully chavez/murray can happen after julio takes care of vera. we already have barker/geale and golovkin/macklin scheduled, so hopefully more of these MWs can start fighting each other. quillin is def out of the mix imo, since he's with gbp and on showtime. not sure how long golovkin's contract is with hbo (if he has one or just does a one fight deal or something). golovkin vs. chavez or quillin are the fights to make though, since martinez is out for a while.

martinez isn't fighting again until early 2014. golovkin is going to have to look for other fights. i say target murray or chavez since they aren't fighting each other anymore. not sure what his situation is with hbo, but i'd like to see him and k2 try and talk to gbp about a potential quillin fight. that would be awesome. plus, after martinez re-injured himself and looked less than stellar, you know damn well dibella isn't going to look at golovkin for martinez's comeback fight.
